Starting Atkins induction Diet Anyone want to join me????

I am beginning the induction phase of the atkins diet on Monday. Does anyone want to join me in this???? I really need to focus on adding Protein and cutting carbs. Here are the rules for the induction phase..

Search Site

recipes <LI class=plain id=portaltab-atkins-university>eggs and red meat, as well as pure, natural fat in the form of butter, mayonnaise, olive oil, safflower, sunflower and other vegetable oils (preferably expeller-pressed or cold-pressed).

2. Eat no more than 20 grams a day of carbohydrate, at least 12 – 15 grams of which must come in the form of salad greens and other vegetables. (see Acceptable Foods).

3. Eat absolutely no fruit, bread, Pasta, grains, starchy vegetables or dairy products other than cheese, cream or butter. Do not eat nuts or seeds in the first two weeks. Foods that combine protein and carbohydrates, such as chickpeas, kidney Beans and other legumes, are not permitted at this time. If you feel you must eat bread or some other grain product, only high Fiber low-carb products with 3 net carbs or less per serving are allowed, and you can eat only one serving a day. Be aware that even that amount may slow or stall your progress, and if that happens, drop the product immediately.

4. Eat nothing that isn't on the Acceptable Foods list. And that means absolutely nothing. Your "just this one taste won't hurt" rationalization is the kiss of failure during this phase of Atkins.

5. Adjust the quantity you eat to suit your appetite, especially as it decreases. When you're hungry, eat the amount that makes you feel satisfied, but not stuffed. When you're not hungry, eat a small controlled carbohydrate snack to accompany your nutritional supplements.

6. Don't assume any food is low in carbohydrate—instead, read labels. Check the carb count (it's on every package) or use a carbohydrate gram counter. Be aware that the law allows manufacturers to round off if a product has fewer than 0.5 grams of any carbohydrate, so that will show up as zero. The only way to detect some fractional carbs is to look for them in the ingredients list, where they must be listed if they’re added to a product, regardless of the amount.

7. Eat out as often as you wish but be on guard for hidden carbs in gravies, sauces and dressings. Gravy is often made with flour or cornstarch, and sugar is sometimes an ingredient in salad dressing.

8. Use sucralose or saccharin as a sweetener. Be sure to count each packet of any of these as 1 gram of carbs, because of the fillers and bulking agents which are added.

9. Avoid too much coffee, tea and soft drinks that contain caffeine. Excessive caffeine has been shown to cause low blood sugar, which can make you crave sugar.

10. Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of Water each day in addition to anything else you may drink, to hydrate your body, avoid constipation and flush out the by-products of burning fat.

11. If you are constipated, mix a tablespoon or more of psyllium husks in a cup or more of water and drink daily. Or mix ground flaxseed into a shake or sprinkle wheat bran on a salad or vegetables.

12. At a minimum, take a good daily Multivitamin with minerals, including potassium, magnesium and Calcium, but without Iron.

Acceptable Foods

These are the foods you may eat liberally during Induction:

All fish,

including ...

All fowl,

including ... All shellfish,

including ...

All meat,

including ... All eggs,

including ...tuna

chicken

oysters*

beef

scrambled

salmon turkey mussels*

pork friedsole duck duck lamb poachedtrout goose clams bacon**soft-boiledflounder Cornish hensquid veal hard-boiledsardines quail shrimp ham**

deviledherring pheasant crabmeat venison omelets

*Oysters and mussels are higher in carbs than other shellfish, so limit them to four ounces per day.

**Processed meats, such as ham, bacon, pepperoni, salami, hot dogs and other luncheon meats—and some fish—may be cured with added sugar and will contribute carbs. Try to avoid meat and fish products cured with nitrates, which are known carcinogens. Also beware of products that are not exclusively meat, fish or fowl, such as imitation fish, meatloaf and breaded foods. Finally, do not consume more than four ounces of organ meats a day.

OTHER FOODS THAT ARE ACCEPTABLE DURING INDUCTION

Cheese

You can consume three to four ounces daily of the following full-fat, firm, soft and semisoft aged cheeses*, including:

  • cheddar
  • cow, sheep and goat cheese
  • cream cheese
  • Gouda
  • mozzarella
  • Roquefort and other blue cheeses
  • Swiss

*All cheeses have some carbohydrate content. The quantity you eat should be governed by that knowledge. The rule of thumb is to count 1 ounce of cheese as equivalent to 1 gram of carbohydrate. Note that cottage cheese, farmer’s cheese and other fresh cheeses are not permitted during Induction. No "diet" cheese, cheese spreads or whey cheeses are permitted. Individuals with known yeast symptoms, dairy allergy or cheese intolerance must avoid cheese. Imitation cheese products are not allowed, except for soy or rice cheese—but check the carbohydrate content.

Vegetables

You should eat 12-15 net carbs a day of vegetables. These salad vegetables are high in phytonutrients and provide a good source of fiber:

  • alfalfa sprouts
  • daikon
  • mushrooms
  • arugula
  • endive
  • parsley
  • bok choy
  • escarole
  • peppers
  • celery
  • fennel
  • radicchio
  • chicory
  • jicama
  • radishes
  • chives
  • lettuce
  • romaine lettuce
  • cucumber
  • mâche
  • sorrel

Other Vegetables

Within the 12-15 net carb daily vegetable requirement, these vegetables are slightly higher in carbohydrate content than the salad vegetables listed above, but they also provide important nutrients and add variety to your daily food intake:

  • artichoke
  • celery root
  • pumpkin
  • artichoke hearts
  • rhubarb
  • asparagus
  • chard
  • sauerkraut
  • bamboo shoots
  • collard greens
  • scallions
  • dandelion
  • snow peas
  • bean sprouts
  • dandelion greens
  • spaghetti squash
  • beet greens
  • eggplant
  • spinach
  • broccoli
  • hearts of palm
  • string or wax beans
  • broccoli rabe
  • kale
  • summer squash
  • Brussels sprouts
  • kohlrabi
  • tomato
  • bean sprouts
  • leeks
  • turnips
  • cabbage
  • okra
  • water chestnuts
  • cauliflower
  • onion
  • zucchini

If a vegetable, such as spinach or tomato, cooks down significantly, it must be measured raw so as not to underestimate its carb count.

Salad Garnishes

  • crumbled crisp bacon
  • grated cheese
  • minced hard-boiled egg
  • sautéed mushrooms
  • sour cream
  • Spices
  • All spices to taste, but make sure none contain added sugar.
  • Herbs
  • basil
  • garlic
  • rosemary
  • cayenne pepper
  • ginger
  • sage
  • cilantro
  • oregano
  • tarragon
  • dill
  • pepper
  • thyme

For salad dressing, use oil and vinegar or lemon juice and herbs and spices. Prepared salad dressings without added sugar and no more than two carbs per tablespoon serving are also fine.

Acceptable Fats and Oils

Many fats, especially certain oils, are essential to good nutrition. Olive oil is particularly valuable. All other vegetable oils are allowed, the best being canola, walnut, soybean, grapeseed, sesame, sunflower and safflower oils, especially if they are labeled "cold-pressed" or "expeller-pressed." Do not cook polyunsaturated oils, such as corn, soybean and sunflower oil, at high temperatures or allow to brown or smoke.

Butter is allowed. Margarine should be avoided, not because of its carbohydrate content, but because it is usually made of trans fats (hydrogenated oils), which are a health hazard. (Some nonhydrogenated margarines are now available.)

You don't have to remove the skin and fat from meat or fowl. Salmon and other cold-water fish are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids.

Remember that trying to do a low-fat version of the Atkins Nutritional ApproachTM may interfere with fat burning and derail your weight loss.

Artificial Sweeteners

You must determine which artificial sweeteners agree with you, but the following are allowed: sucralose (marketed as Splenda™), saccharin, cyclamate and acesulfame-K. Natural sweeteners ending in the suffix "-ose," such as maltose, etc., should be avoided. However, most sugar alcohols have a minimal effect on blood sugar and are acceptable.

Saccharin has been extensively studied, and harmful effects were produced in the lab when fed to rats only in extremely high doses. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has removed saccharin from its list of carcinogens, basing its decision upon a thorough review of the medical literature and the National Institute of Science’s statement that there is "no clear association between saccharin and human cancer." It can be safely consumed in moderation, meaning no more than three packets a day. Saccharin is marketed as Sweet'n Low™.

The Atkins preference, however, is sucralose (Splenda™), the only sweetener made from sugar. Sucralose is safe, noncaloric and does not raise blood sugar. It has been used in Canada for years, and the FDA approved it after reviewing more than 100 studies conducted over the past 20 years. Note that each packet of sugar substitute contains about 1 gram of carbohydrate, so don’t forget to include the amount in your daily totals.

Acceptable beverages

Be sure to drink a minimum of eight eight-ounce glasses of water each day, including:

  • Filtered water
  • Mineral water
  • Spring water
  • Tap water

Additionally, you can have the following:

  • Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
  • Club soda
  • Cream, heavy or light (limit to two to three tablespoons a day; note carbohydrate content)
  • Decaffeinated or regular coffee or tea*
  • Diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda™); be sure to count the carbs
  • Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories")
  • Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
  • Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three tablespoons

* Caffeine can cause cravings or blood sugar spikes with some people. If you’re one of them, you should drink only decaffeinated beverages. If you don’t have a problem with caffeine, you may drink one or two caffeinated beverages a day, because evolving research indicates there may actually be health benefits to a limited amount of caffeine. However, if you have a true caffeine addiction, it will be best to break it during Induction, because any food addiction can cause problems if it isn’t taken care of. Once you’ve broken the addiction and moved on to OWL, you can carefully try adding caffeinated beverages back into your food intake, as long as it doesn’t trigger the addiction again.

Special Category Foods

To add variety, each day you can also eat 10 to 20 olives, half a small avocado, an ounce of sour cream or three ounces of unsweetened heavy cream, as well as two to three tablespoons of lemon juice or lime juice. But be aware that these foods occasionally slow down weight loss in some people, and may need to be avoided in the first two weeks. If you seem to be losing slowly, moderate your intake of these foods.

Convenience Foods

Although it is important that you eat primarily unprocessed foods, some controlled carb food products can come in handy when you are unable to find appropriate food, can’t take time for a meal or need a quick snack. More and more companies are creating healthy food products that can be eaten during the Induction phase of Atkins. Just remember two things:

1. Not all convenience food products are the same, so check labels and carbohydrate content. (See the Online Store for Atkins brand products.)

2. While any of these foods can make doing Atkins easier, don’t overdo it. Remember, you must always follow The Rules of Induction.

I did pretty good yesterday, with the exception of a lemon slush from Sonic. FULL OF SUGAR!!. I am having an Atkins shake for breakfast this morning. Weekends are so hard for me.

Looking forward to a great week!!

Amy

I've been really busy this weekend and I didn't do so well, but I'm trying to start strong again today. I was gone all day long yesterday, after church I went with my sister to help her find her wedding dress. I'm going to try to do my best this week but my sons' birthday party is this weekend and I'm going to eat, celebrate and have fun! So until then, it's back to carb-free living.

OK so last night my husband breaks out the huge container of white powdered donuts that Grandma sent home with me last week ... they looked and smelled so good. I ate one ... but I didn't swallow! I just chewed it then spit it out  ... sounds lame I know, kinda like when Clinton said he didn't inhale LOL ... but I didn't want to ruin the progress I've made so far. Anyhow, just tasting it was enough to satisfy the craving. To my surprise, the scale went down another 8oz this morning  ... thought for sure it would have been at a standstill due to me so dang lazy yesterday!

Hope ya'll have a great day today ... I'm off to continue house hunting

I am up 2 pounds this morning!! Oh dear!!!! I have got to lay of the lemon slushes!! Glad to hear from you Georgia. I was afraid you were MIA!!!

I feel like I have been MIA!! It's so hard to eat well when I'm on the go so much. This week isn't going to be much better with planning my sons' party. The good news is, I found out that I didn't have to go to jury duty today like I thought I was going to have to. I am soooo relieved about that. Anyway, today's going a lot better.

Hope ya'll are doing well! No movement on the scale for me this morning (Aunt Flo has arrived :))

Here's what I had yesterday ...

Breakfast ~ Atkins Caramel Latte shake

Lunch ~ Chicken Salad (1oz lettuce, 2oz grilled chicken, 1 colby jack cheese stick, 1 hard boiled egg, 2 T italian dressing)

Dinner ~ 3/4 of a mild italian sausage link & 1 colby jack cheese stick

Guys, I am having a REALLY hard time staying on Atkins this week. Maybe I have done the induction for as long as I can stand it. For example, today for lunch, I was very hungry for some bread. I toasted a piece of wheat bread and ate ham and cheese with it. Not so bad, huh. But on atkins it is bad. Don't know what to do. I was going to just quit doing atkins, then I weighed and I am down a pound. I am not looking for "oh you can do it" remarks. I really want to know what yall think. do you think I am being a wimp and just need to put on my big girl panties, or is it time to modify my diet as this is a for the rest of my life thing, not a "diet". What do you guys think???

Whew.....well, I spent all day (off and on) reading this thread. I was banded in September and am not pleased with my progress at all. I have nobody to blame but myself. I am a big emotional/stress eater and though I was in therapy for almost 2 years before I had surgery, but I guess it was not enough. I am now back in individual and group therapy. However, I know that a big part of my problem is also my sugar/carb addiction. I did very well on my very low carb pre-op diet because I got off the sugar/carbs. Now, I'm back on sugar/carbs full fledge and I drink with my meals so I can eat more and I'm just basically eating around my band. I'm very disappointed in myself and I have some serious changes to make. I think low carbing will help me because it will help reduce my appetite and cravings.

Anyway, enough of my rambling. I really want to do this. I have a few questions if you all don't mind.

Georgia girl--What does the lightly salted dry roasted edamame taste like?

Those who workout, has low carbing kept you from being able to work out as long/hard as you did before low carbing? I am very proud of myself in that I have been working out religiously for a month now and I am able to do 45-60 minutes of cardio plus some weights (not a whole lot) about 4 times per week. I do not want to lose my stamina and endurance. I know in the past when I have tried to eat low carb or even cut my calories, it makes a big difference in how good and long I can workout.

Well, I'm sure I'll have more questions. I'm thinking of starting Friday because I know for me, in the past, days 2 and 3 have always been the worst and that would put those days being Saturday and Sunday so I could just sleep all day if need be.

Georgia girl--What does the lightly salted dry roasted edamame taste like?

Hey mandi78! They taste kind of like peanuts to me. The only problem I have with them is that they make my mouth really dry and I really want to drink something when I eat them. It's really hard to wait at least 30 minutes before I drink something. They are a very nutritious snack, and very high in protein. I think they have 2 net carbs per 1/4 cup, which is really good.

Good luck on the low carb diet. I hope it helps you get to where you need to be.

Renewed, I think we are sister's separated at birth, lol. I am going through the exact same thing. I haven't been posting because I didn't want to be a downer and bum everyone out. This has not been a good week for me at all. I am craving sugar like crazy. Low carb really works for me, but the problem is, it's soooo hard to make it a lifestyle.

I was talking to my husband yesterday about this, and he said I was much happier and seemed to have more energy when I was eating a balanced meal. I haven't really had any fruits or many vegetables since I started this. I'm not a huge meat fan in the first place, so it's been hard to eat all this meat. I'm also dealing with a lot of hormonal issues that my Endo is working with me on, she's trying to help me get some energy back. I've just been feeling crappy and I think that is a huge factor in the way I'm feeling.

I don't really know what to tell you because I'm having the same thoughts. I'm really thinking about trying to start with the calories again. I feel your pain!

Noooo you're not being a wimp! You just need to find what works for you, not only with the weightloss but also with what leaves you happy, content & satisfied. I guess the reason why I can stick to Atkins easily is because of my total dislike for veggies and such ... since I don't like them, I don't miss them! Gave up bread a long time ago because it causes pain so don't miss it either. Having all the sweets in the house lately has been rather difficult though. So bad I want to eat a Twinkie but more than that I want to achieve my mini goal by next week, it's super important to me.

Seriously, count calories for a few days and see what happens. You don't have to do Atkins ALL the time, switch things up every once in awhile to find out what works for you! :tt1:

I ate too many calories today ...

thanks guys. My dh and I were also talking about this last night. I like meat, so that is not a problem for me. I also love fruits and vegetables. I really don't eat much bread. It's hard to get down, but toast I do ok with. I want to be able, at some point, to make good food choices in small quantities, without counting anything. I am so fearful of doing that, because I don't want to screw up my weight loss. However, I don't want to "diet" for always.

I also couldn't tell any difference with my last fill until yesterday. Isn't that odd? I suddenly have more restriction. I am also dealing with the emotional part of all of the more than i have before. I was telling dh last night that I want to gulp a drink. I want to just eat normal. Obviously that is not what I really want. My goal to lose weight is much larger than my desire for these things. I think I am just going through a period of grieving my old habits. As destructive as they were, they were mine and I had held on to them for years. With my all or nothing behavior, this is where I would usually just stop, but I am determined to fight through this. I am however struggling emotionally. In thinking about all of this last night I think I discovered that the big picture is not atkins vs calories. It is just part of my journey in breaking my addiction to food.

Georgia, I think we were seperated at birth. It is so crazy how our journeys have so closely resembled each other!! The important thing for all of us is that we continue to press forward.

One of my favorite Bible verses is Phollipians 3:12...

"Not that I have already obtained all of this, or that I have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me."

So, for today, I am really not sure what "diet" I am going to follow, but I am going to press on!!!!

Amy

Amy, I know how you feel. This is why I'm not even sure if starting Atkins is the right thing for me. I know I have to do something though. I am not losing at all and my habits are very destructive. I'm not following bandster guidelines at all. I'm just hoping and praying that I have not already stretched my pouch or messed up something regarding my stomach or my band.

I also couldn't tell any difference with my last fill until yesterday. Isn't that odd? I suddenly have more restriction.

Renewed, that is just crazy! I posted on the Sweetheart Goal thread last night that I suddenly had more restriction yesterday. We definitely have a lot in common! I'm gonna call you my Soul Sista! LOL!

Your comments and scripture about pressing forward reminds me of a song by Selah that I love, it's called "Press On". Your right, no matter what we decide to do, we have to press on and continue with the weight loss. Good luck today and hopefully we will find what works for us soon!

Ok, I am doing a little better. I am still having this big time craving for lemon slush from Sonic. They are so full of sugar. i am ambarressed to even tell you how many carbs. Tonight is date night for dh and I. i am going o walmart to buy an ice shredder and some lemons. I am going to make my own slushes. It's the sour I like. I could even do without the sugar. I still have more restriction. I ate chicken bites for lunch today. My scales were up a pound today. I also went to the gym and did 50 minutes of cardio. Not perfect, but still pressing on!!!

Amy

I think I am done with atkins for now. Do you guys think I should start a new thread that we can support each other on and leave this one for those of you who want to continue atkins. I definately don't want to be a downer for those who do this with success. Bloo, you are doing amazing!! Keep it up!! If we start a new thread, what should we call it???
