Sit ups...

Recommended Posts

Ok...so I was at the gym this morning, started doing sit ups on a ball, and I could really feel my port wiggling around. I am 5 weeks out. Is this ok, or should I hold off a bit?

I was told to wait till 10wks out to do any ab / weight training. I still get wigged out doing abs thinking I feel my port moving around.

I would ask your doctor about it, but keep in mind that everyone is different. I started working out normally after 3 weeks...

My doc cleared me to do all exercise, including lifting after 30 days. You should do what your doc's office suggests. However, that being said, all during the first year of my band, when I would really work my abs hard and they were sore, my port was often sore or I could feel it while working out. It is the ab muscle healing and adjusting to the port. Sore, but nothing to be concerned about unless it really hurts all the time. I think what you are feeling is normal. BUT, again, make sure you are following your doc's orders! Good luck...those abs will thank you for it!! HAHA.

My doc had me doing exercise, including light weight lifting and ab work at two weeks, and he had me on the elliptical four days post-op. As he stated, "I do this procedure for police who come in for surgery on Thursday and are back to full active-duty the next Monday; the elliptical isn't going to hurt you. Don't lift anything over 20 pounds for a month, but everything else is open."

This just shows how different all surgeons are. my husband and I were cleared to lift 100lbs after 7 days and any exercise. The trainer at the gym, that we joined, 2 months after my surgery was hesitant about giving my ab workouts, so I had to recheck with the surgeon. yep they said cleared after 7 days, do what you are comfortable doing.

My advice talk to your own surgeon as each one differs.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
