North Alabama (Huntsville) Support Group

Recommended Posts

I think we've talked about this before... but didn't get alot of response. I thought if there was a thread about it, maybe it would be more visable.

Anyone intrested in starting a support group meeting in Huntsville, AL? Would be open to anyone wanting to come... meaning not just "Huntsville" residents but surrounding areas also.

I really think it would be a help to have this.... and I'm willing to help in anyway... I just don't know that I would like to host it haha.. Not much on hosting... but will help find a place to have it and anything else I can help with.

I'm in Huntsville, and would love for there to be a band group. All I know of are RNY.

I would be interested. Huntsville or Madison. I live in Hartselle but work in Madison. So a Madison meeting would work well for me.

Get it going guys

I'm not a leader type person.

I actually live in Madison, work in Huntsville.. so either would be fine! Madison is closer to Decatur

Hey everyone! I haven't been banded yet either.. only 19 more days until I am finished with the 6 month documented diet and dont have a surgery date set yet. I don't feel qualified to lead it as far as what to do after the surgery. Does anyone know someone who's had it done that wouldn't mind leading it? Any suggestions on a good quiet place to meet? and if using the room is free.... of course that would be great!! :)

Madison Square Mall actually has a lot of group couch set ups now in the food court area (next to Starbucks). Skinny Latte anyone?

I'll be the 'leader' in the sense I can get it scheduled if you guys are interested, doesn't take a whole lot to do that hah hah.

MSM sound good for everyone?

I don't know where Madison Square Mall is but I will try to find it. I live in Cherokee (city of) so it would be a drive but I would be willing to try to come once a month or so. Let me know if/when you get it organized.

Well we are getting there! Madison Square is fine with me. Is it rooms that they will allow us to use? I haven't been there in over a year so I dont really remember how it's set up. I've heard that theres a group that meets at the HSV library but was for the bypass. (I think) The mall area might be better for people in Madison too. Booking a location wasn't as big of a deal to me as basically being the spokesperson so to speak. Coming up with topics, hosting, whatever you want to call it. I guess because I haven't had the surgery yet, I didn't feel qualified to lead it but looks like the majority of us haven't. So... anyone know how to make a poll to se which day would be best, how many times a month, etc? Let's get it going .

It's not a 'room', but they have couches and tables and stuff set up for meetings in the food Court area now. 2x a month? Like every 1st and Last Tuesday of the month? If you can only make it once a month, then pick the one you want to come to, etc.

I am very interested in all the details. Keep us posted. I had surgery 3/29/07 and have lost close to 115 pounds. It helps to have someone to talk to. My husband is going through his 6 month approval period right now. :)

I went to Madison Square this weekend. First time in years. I saw the group of seats (couches, chairs etc) set up in several places around the mall. I guess depending on which one we can get, the noise may be a factor. I personally would prefer more of a room type setting so we can hear better but we can always try it and IF it don't work out, find something then. 2 times a month is fine with me also.

Ok.. I just don't know where rooms are, never done meetings around here. I see those couches everytime I go, which is why I thought of it.

Any other ideas? I don't particularly like the h'ville library unless it's a last resort. Something about that place gives me an uneasy feeling. I definitely need to be in a local support group, I'm havin issues lately

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
