Lost but happened ....now what

Just hoping to reach out, to gain strength from my own weakness and now the gained 50 lbs I surely can not have. Backdrop, I had gastric bypass in 2012. Never had any real issues. All was good.

I took all my Vitamins did everything I was supposed to do. 7 years ago I broke my L1. And my L2. They discovered I had Osteoporosis at age 53 and with no family history and all my blood work every year looking fantastic, that slowed me down quite a bit. Here we are at a whopping 238. The last thing I need on my spine is more weight. Broke my l1 again not sure but I am guessing I best get busy and get this weight off.

I am struggling. I am truthfully not hungry most the time. I am binge eating nothing horrible but certainly enough to help pack it on. I think most of my weight packed on when I started working from home and had access to everything.

I think I just need some help getting started again of what I'm supposed to do going back to the basics of the beginning and since I know this. Why is it so hard for me to do it?

If you had regained and lost the weight again, tell me how you did it.

I am so glad you came back in the forum. You have made the big step by admitting your weight gain. It happens. To me you have done great, only 50 pounds on in 13 years means you have been on it.

I have seen this advice given to others - You need to prioritise Protein, then veggies. Up your Water. Try to quell the Snacks. Exercise more. You need a calorie deficit.

Good luck, you will get lots of help from other members who know more than me.

You’ve started already by admitting the gain, I usually restart with making sure I get my Water. I track it, or get a new bottle, get some sugar free flavor. I have a chunky solid ring that I wear as an anchor for my thoughts. When I I get distracted thinking negative thoughts, I take off the ring and give it a little polish cleaning the ring and my brain. Sometimes I just twist the ring to “clean my brain.” Those two things get me started on the right path.

Ps. I’ve recently seen some really positive videos on YouTube about reversing osteopenia and osteoporosis based upon scientific research. When you are ready for them, you can start. But for now, you are not alone in dealing with “surprise body stuff.”

The best advice I can give is to not try to revamp everything all at once. People that try that rarely succeed long term. Sure, it can work in the short term, but the real goal has to be retraining your body and mind how to be healthy.

As such, I would urge you to pick something small to start working on today, or at least in the morning if you want to start fresh. This needs to be something so small as to almost be inconsequential. The reason it needs to be small (aside from helping with compliance), is so that your body and mind don't actually recognize that you're "dieting" or "working out". Continue with that one simple thing for a couple of weeks until it's become a new habit. Once that new habit is established, you can then make another small change. Just keep making small sustainable changes until you reach your goal.

Yes, this approach is very slow, certainly much slower than drastic diet and exercise plans that promise quick results. Remember, what does it matter if you lose all the weight quickly if when you get there, you can't maintain the weight loss?

Your real goal needs to be learning how you personally need to eat and move for long-term health. What that looks like is different for everyone, so no one here can tell you "eat this way", or "do these exercises" and you'll find success. It has to fit in with your unique needs, tastes and abilities and only you know what those are.

If you feel like you need more guidance than that, I'd suggest seeking out professionals such as Registered Dietitians and Certified Personal Trainers. to help put more detailed plans together.

Small changes for the win every time! Small changes are always much easier to adapt to and adopt. It might take longer but it’s more likely to stick in the long term. Track your eating and drinking for a week or so. Over time it’s easy to become complacent and let things slide a little in regards to food choices, portion sizes &/or frequency of eating and activity. Then choose which one or two you’ll focus on changing first.

Remember to hit those old goals. Get your Protein in first, then vegetables, some fruit and some whole or multi grain carbs last of all. Ensure you’re getting in your Water.

I’ve put on a small amount this year after a hysterectomy. We’re still trying to sort out my hormones but it’s been an emotional time not helped by experiencing full on menopausal symptoms (after managing them for years) plus cravings, food noise, bloating, headaches, … even acne. My weight had been stable until this & my routines were deeply embedded.i felt in control for the first time ever so the weight gain was difficult to understand & messed with me. But life does throw crap at us at times. I’ve dropped a snack, reduced my portions a little, added a couple more stretches and movements to my non exercise activity routine. Deciding what I might change next.

Weight regain is not something to be ashamed of. Everybody goes up a bit and down a bit. Just restart what you learned many years ago. Start with the Protein and hydration, and watch those carbs. It is important to also have some therapy to help you through the emotional eating, or handy eating since you were working from home. I think a lot of people regained over the Covid hold we were all subjected to. Nonetheless, you could join BariNation for a month and join in some of the groups. Groups are with licensed professionals, meet-ups is with peers in the Nation. I believe that when you are involved with community on a regular basis, you will be supported and will be more successful. If you have your own therapist, then that is great, but for 40 bucks you can attend unlimited groups with BariNation, and be with people that understand you and get you. Just a thought to help you during the hard parts.

...and lets not forget good ole fashioned therapy. its easy to know what to do, harder to actually do it, and close to impossible (without help and introspection) to know WHY you can't seem to do it when you already know exactly what to do.

it may (or may not!) help to completely get all the weight off, but it will at least help to calm your mind and be at relative peace if you don't.

All that advice sounds great. Maybe you should also consider going back to your dietician. He/she may be able to put you on the right track again. Good luck to you. I'm sure you're going to get back to where you want to be.

Good advice above. Gotta love this place. I regained 7kg last year after losing for a year and a half after surgery, and then holding pretty steady at my below target weight for another year.

Like you I know where my 7kg came from. For me it's alcohol and carbs (and sometimes alcoholic carbs!) When I get back to basics and stop drinking wine and eating white carbs it comes off slowly. When I don't it goes back on - somewhat less slowly! I am kind of allowing myself to bounce about within a 5kg window and managing that but honestly I am working kinda hard to achieve it. So far I haven't seen the scales climb any higher but I know a crisis or even just a change in circumstances or health (mental or physical) could scupper me. I do not take being this weight for granted.

I hope you can get back on track - I know you have an incentive with your back problem but that doesn't make it one bit easier.

      2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation.       Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
