I drank this weekend for the first time since surgery. I never really drank much before surgery, but maybe a few times a year.

I am about 4.5 post-op and it didn't kill me. Or make me sick. I even stayed in my calorie range.

I didn't plan on drinking but it was my birthday and I was thrown a surprise Birthday party so I decided to try it out. Worse case, sick at my own party.

I was bought a shot of fireball. (My favorite but ALL sugar) I drank and 1/3 of it rather than the entire shot and then waited to see what would happen. Nothing, so I drank another 1/3 waited a few and then the last of the shot. Then.... was I buzzed? I don't even know, I felt buzzed but off of 1/1.5 oz? I know they say it hits you faster but I am still not even sure what it was. It felt different, but still buzzed. Lasted about 10 minutes. LAME..haha

So I ended up having a total of 4 shots all night, buzzed for sure at the end of the night but again. It went away FAST. Like 30 minutes later I was sober. I woke up in the middle of the night with a headache, probably dehydrated. Drank a bottle of Water with some Tylenol and went back to sleep.

Next day, perfectly fine and back to my Protein rich days.

I doubt I will drink again for awhile. But I enjoyed my Birthday, guilt free without any issues.

Yea it’s not the same for me either. I used to drink rum and Coke Zero so I have tried rum and crystal light but it didn’t taste very good so I think I’m just not able to drink it fast enough to get a buzz. I have since tried the pineapple flavored one and I can get a slight buzz on that but like you it doesn’t last long and it’s of course higher in calories. It sorta not worth it anymore.

I agree on the not worth the calories anymore statement.

Everything I eat or drink, I say to myself "is it worth it" sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. It's a balance of where I am for the day on my calories/macros and if I really want whatever I am about to eat or drink.

Everything is justified by calories now.

Happy Belated Birthday! And it's good to hear someone had an OK experience with drinking. I only have a drink a few times a year as well, so being able to still do that would be nice.

Happy Birthday!!! Thanks for this update. I was in Vegas over the weekend and too scared to drink as I have read horror stories. I think the first time I will do it at home in case I get sick or stupid (or both LOL)

I have found that every phase of drinking is faster. The buzz hits quicker, but doesn't last as long, quickly giving way to the hangover (the headache you woke up with), and by early morning it's like it never happened. Be careful as this can really annoy partners that go through everything at the normal pace and wake with the hangover. So be sensitive and refrain from slamming doors and drawers over much, unless they acted poorly the night before.

Good Luck,

Tek

I am Irish and I'm afraid alcohol is baked into my culture. I have drunk some wine most weekends since 6 weeks after I had my sleeve last November when my (Irish!) surgeon and nutritionist permitted it. Yes I do get a hit much quicker than I used to, especially if I haven't eaten much beforehand, and yes, it wears off much quicker too. I do count the calories and I only do it at weekends. It has probably slowed my weight loss but I'm accepting that. I totally get that mightn't be acceptable to other people. But IMO it hasn't held me back *that* much.

Happy birthday.

I’m one of those who lost a lot of their taste & desire for alcohol after surgery. I went from a large glass or two every night to a regular glass once a month & sometimes I don’t finish the glass. Sure there are times I may drink more frequently or if it’s a long evening I might sip on a second glass but they’re rare. I say I go for quality rather than quantity now. So I drink champagne, quality gin, wine or whisky - well that’s my justification for spending a lot on a single glass - tee hee!

I guess it just comes down to what you enjoy & can manage.

Happy Birthday @kcuster83

Just tossing in my two cents. I am coming up on 8 months post surgery. I began to drink alcohol again around month 5 or 6.

I did not have a problem with alcohol prior to surgery and I do not believe I have a problem with alcohol post surgery.

As others have stated, the alcohol hits you much faster than before so I would recommend that you are careful. I would also recommend not driving...even with only one drink. The alcohol really does go to your brain much faster.

Oh I don't drive AT ALL, ever. Even with one drink! Not worth it, I have had friends killed by drunk drivers.

Yea. I always worry when I have a drink because it hits me faster that I may fail a breathalyzer somehow even with one. I always make sure that everyone is home safe and things seem settled and safe so that I’m not going to need to rush out for anything because of this (I would not do well in jail even for a night, lol).

Happy birthday!!!

Thanks for sharing! How alcohol is tolerated has been something I have wondered about.

I am going on a cruise next August for my birthday (and Celebrate my new me). Last time I went I got the alcohol package and drank, well, a lot (hey, it was vacation a decade ago;) ). I figure it won’t be worth it at all to get the package (especially since my husband doesn’t really drink much ) but I do plan on having some adult beverages for that 5 day cruise.

Yes girl! We have to enjoy ourselves through all of this. We just need to keep it in check and understand how it effects us!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
