October 2022 surgery support

Recommended Posts

I had mine on the 11th. Things went pretty darn well and I was sent home the next day. I think I had 3 of my pain pills (including in the hospital). I only took 1/2 pills... I do not need to plug myself up and I don't want an oxy addiction.
I, too, have moments where I kind of forget that I had surgery, it's weird.
I'm on full liquids right now and am able to meet my goal of 64oz a few days, but never my Protein goal.
I'm allowed to try some very thin puree, but haven't yet. I want to and I don't want to.
broth and Water have been my friend. I made a HUGE batch of Bone Broth and have that at least twice a day. Sometimes I put protein in that, but my tummy can tell when I do. I put some spices in it today and then had kind of a freak out moment because - what if a spice gets stuck in a healing staple wound?! I get panicked sometimes about little things like that.
I'm able to take a mouthful of water and break it down into about 4-5 swallows, which helps with my intake (sip, sip, sipping is hard).
I've been moving and walking, but every day is a little different. Some days my energy levels are good, and others I'm a bit more tired.
I had one poo like 3 or so days out, but it was very little, and nothing since even though I've taken stool softeners, magnesium, and magnesium powder. Today I tried some milk of magnesia in hopes that I will go tomorrow.
That's my 1-week wrap up! LOL. Hope you are all doing well. And for those of you still on the docket for surgery - best wishes!

Mine was on the 11th too.

I meet my protein goals by adding Protein Powder (and water) to my pre made Protein Shakes. I also drink premeir protein clear drinks instead of plain water. That was the only way to meet my protein goals. I tried adding protein to my Soup but it made it taste so bad and have a weird unpleasant consistency.

I'm glad you are doing well! Keep it going!

Scared but excited.

Update! Some positive! I'm almost 5 days post op from VSG in Turkey. My first night was rough. I vomited foam and was nauseated. Gas pains were definitely present and my heating pad seemed to just make my nausea worse in my case.

I was definitely having buyers remorse on day two...... but now my gas pains are gone and I'm walking a ton.

They keep me until tomorrow morning.

I was cleared for liquid diet and fluids yesterday after my 2nd leak test cleared and my drain was removed.

So happy to be off my IVs and have my abdominal drain removed. I'm eating (though my hospital food is meh which makes it harder), getting my Protein Shakes down and getting about 34 Oz (1 liter) of Water in on my second day allowed. I know i can meet my 2 liter goal very soon.

I'm feeling very positive and cannot wait to get home to some well seasoned broth.

Congratulations! I'm so excited for pureed stage (4 more days for me) I'm really tired of all the sweet shakes and yogurts. Ready for cottage cheese and hummus and refried Beans 🤤

You're having an epidural?! I thought they stopped doing those for gastric surgeries because a parient cant feel if there is something wrong like internal bleeding. I only had general anesthesia and thought the pain relief injected into the iv was sufficient.

It ended up working for me (and was not that bad!) and has helped with pain exponentially. I only hurt a little bit after I woke up and they gave me something through my IV to help, and since then I mainly only hurt when I have to get up and then lay back down. Only thing that sucks is it numbed me a bit down so I struggled peeing because I couldn’t feel it. I finally went a couple of hours ago this morning, glad I did as they were about to give me a catheter and that’s probably one of my worst nightmares lol.

First day post op for me and I’m really pleasantly surprised. I know when I go home the pain might be worse but so far so good. Aside from my aforementioned issue with not being able to pee at first (and the threat of a catheter looming over me) along with the occasional pain when I get up and down, I actually don’t feel too terrible. All of my meds are liquids though and they haven’t been super fun to get down at first. Especially with the sizes, tastes (not all so good), and frequency of them - and only having Water to drink at first so no ability to clear out the taste. Had some nausea on my first round of liquid Tylenol but thankfully it passed and I’m doing okay since with the rest of them. I’m already really glad I did this. And even more glad because I lost 25 pounds pre-op and I found out when getting ready for surgery 😊

I'm glad things have gone well! for you I've found that - for me - surgical pain tends to steadily get worse for 3 days. After that, it starts getting better.

I wish you a speedy recovery! :)

Thank you so much for the kindness. I ended up speaking waaaaayyy too soon. The last 12+ hours have been miserable. I was discharged from the hospital last night and I’ve dry heaved/vomited three times. The first one I can explain away because I took my pain med on a practically empty stomach without Protein (which I didn’t know I shouldn’t do until after the fact), but the other two there’s no rhyme or reason to them. I’m not even taking any medications because I keep getting nauseous / dry heaving — except for the nausea patch behind my ear (which clearly isn’t doing anything for me), Zofran, and the Prilosec.

I know for a fact I’m not drinking near enough between my fear of vomiting and then the fact I am (TMI) spitting up bile and some of my liquid the last two dry heaves. Worried I’m gonna end up back in the hospital at this rate. Also sucks that I’m heaving because I can’t take any pain meds to ease my pain — though most of my pain is when I get up and down or bend more than anything

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that things have gotten worse for you! Perhaps you can call your surgeon's office? Mine has on-call staff who can help. Maybe they can order something else for you. I hate to say it, but you may need a nausea suppository. :( I would totally call them though. You need to get the vomiting under control. Hugs!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
