hi everyone, i am new here and this is my first time posting.

i had my sleeve done 6/30/22 and i am currently 6 days post op. i feel great, the only discomfort (and i say that's pushing it) is one of my incisions on the left and a bit of gas that i still feel sometimes. i am still currently in the liquid diet, which my surgeon and nutritionist instructed would last up until the 9th. the pureed stage is next, but my real concern is the "solid food" phase.

my pureed stage is supposed to last from the 10th to the 19th, and then start reintroducing solid foods like well cooked chicken, fish, meat, and well cooked vegetables from the 20th to the 29th. i am scared to eat food again. are these dates okay for each phase? am i just overthinking this? i know i shouldn't question it since it was direct instructions from my surgeon and nutritionist but i am just scared. anybody else instructed to try solid foods before the 1 month post op date?

this blog has been extremely helpful. thank you so much in advanced :)

Every team and their plans differ so much you will get 100 different answers here.

Mine was 2 weeks each phase. 2 weeks liquids, 2 weeks pureed, 2 weeks super soft foods and then on to solid foods and slowly introducing yourself back into a normal balanced diet.

I would just follow the directions of your team, if you struggle when you get to a particular stage reach out to them for help/guidance.

kcuster83, thank you so much for your response! i guess i'm just in my head a little bit about it and it's making me overthink. i will definitely keep in contact with my team and will try my best to follow my plan.

I would personally trust your team but my instructions say if you have any trouble with a stage you can always go back to the previous phase so I say do it as you feel comfortable advancing to the next stage. You can go slower, just not faster through the stages. If I had to guess though you will be ready sooner than you think to advance to the next stage. Liquids and purées can get pretty boring.

Welcome. As others above have said, said there are a lot of variations in plans. Mine also was two week stages. A good thing to remember is if you move to a next stage & find it a struggle just go back to the previous stage for a few days. We all heal at different rates & sometimes you need a little longer than what is suggested by your plan & that’s fine. Just do what works best for you.

When you can eat solid food think soft like slow cooked meat based Soups, stews/casseroles, etc. so the meat & vegetables are soft & ‘fall off the bone’ tender. I found mince based dishes easiest to begin. And ensure you have sauces or gravies to keep your meat moist & easy to swallow.

Don't worry, you'll be fine. If it makes you feel better not every doctor even has their patients do the liquid phase - I was sleeved in 2016 and then had bypass revision in 2021 and both times I was eating real food the day I left the hospital, starting with scrambled eggs, egg salad, chicken salad, tuna, refried Beans, etc. and no issues at all.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
