Does anyone know when we are allowed to drink coffee? I had gastric bypass and it’s over 30days since surgery.

Surgeons tend to vary drastically about this. Some people are offered coffee for Breakfast in the hospital and others aren’t allowed any until months out. Best to check with your team on this one.

Hi Nicole! I was told 3 months due to caffeine causing dehydration and the acidity of the coffee bean causing issues while healing. However, it definitely varies per program. The lack of caffeine doesn't necessarily bother me...I just want my coffee for the taste alone. I'd be lying if I said I haven't contemplated giving it a try ;) Looking forward to seeing what others have to say. I'll be 4 weeks post op tomorrow and two months seems like forever right now.

I was offered coffee in the hospital, but I don't drink coffee lol I get my caffeine from the Protein Shakes that have it (fairlife is amazing). I've had it from day 1 that I was allowed to have the shakes. Also, my dietician said as long as you increase your fluids when having caffeine, you'll be ok because caffeine tends to dehydrate. I drink my shake in the morning and then another 70+ ounces in fluids throughout the day.

there is no consensus among surgeons on this. None. Some patients are drinking it before they even leave the hospital. Others are told they can never drink it again for the rest of our lives. And then there are those in the middle - who say they can drink it after x amount of time (one month ....or three months...or six months). So I'd check with your clinic to see what they say.

Caffeine really isn't dehydrating. That's an old belief; newer research shows that unless you are drinking more than about 450 mg of caffeine (about 5 cups of coffee), you are fine. I was told I could have caffeine after 30 days, mostly because it can irritate your stomach. I drink tons of coffee, tea, and some diet soda now and I have no issues with dehydration.

Like others, I was offered coffee at the hospital, No restrictions on coffee from my surgeon, pre or post. He is onboard that coffee is a superfood due to antioxidants... Etc. I drink mine with milk, cashew, almond, or oat milk. Black coffee may be a little harsh on an empty stomach for me since I had a history of gerd.

I agree with you 100%. I did the research and coffee also has health benefits, provided you don’t exceed 450 mg. My dietician doesn’t allow caffeine EVER, as in never! I say bullshit to that rule and plan on drinking coffee when I get to the 3rd month. I’m currently on week 7 and drinking Decaf coffee occasionally.

I'm 9 months out and do about 6 oz of moka pot coffee a day. For me, it curbs my appetite in a big way.

I just added caffiene-3 weeks out from surgery. I mixed black iced coffee with a 1/2 of a vanilla Premier Protein shake and it was delicious. Felt like an iced latte.

Same here except I was 4wks post-op I can't have much coffee though like half a cup or less .

Sent from my Pixel 4a using BariatricPal mobile app

My coffee intake is still pretty small. I can sip coffee over the course of two hours, in between sips of Water.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
