August surgery buddies!

  • Popular Post

Hi everyone! I am scheduled for my gastric sleeve for August 17th. I am 5'3" and 230 lbs so the doctor said I need to lose 100 lbs. Honestly I am super nervous and keep having thoughts of excitement but then I think well maybe I will just cancel it. Is it normal to feel this way? I would love to meet other people that are scheduled on the same month or around so we can somewhat do this process together.

Do you think it makes it easier for them to do the liquid diet afterwards, since they have practice, so to speak? I'm doing ok, but as I said I do feel somewhat hungry and I also have heartburn on and off. Right now, I can only drink water, as everything else gives me heartburn.
I'm not sure if my mandarory pre-op liquid diet helped me physically prepare. The jury's still out. It has done a number on my mind though. I keep thinking "How can I go that long without eating solid food". I'm on post-op day 2 and I really wish I could have some homemade waffles or a sandwich. I'm not even hungry....just tired and feeling crappy during recovery. I see why so many people suggest therapy.
Don’t want to scare anyone but my recovery has been ROUGH… I had my surgery on 8/9 and surgery went great but the nausea has been awful! I’ve been vomiting constantly! And the anesthesia has messed with my bladder so I haven’t been able to pee on my own. The doctor finally has a catheter put in, and hopefully my bladder will wake up tomorrow.
Same with my bladder!!!! It's finally decided to wake up but it had me worried for a few hours at the hospital until I asked.

Yeah I’ve been straight cathed 3 times, and the doc finally decided a full catheter would be best… so I’m stuck at the hospital for an additional night to hopefully get the bladder going.

Oh, that sounds rough. I did have nausea yesterday, but not at all today. Hopefully your bladder will be ok tomorrow. This has happened to me before after surgery, but not this time, thankfully.

Oh! I'm sorry! I was extremely nauseous too. They finally gave me Phenergan and it was the only thing that worked (well and sucking on ice chips). A lot of people also swear by smelling an alcohol pad to get rid of the nausea.

I hope everything resolves itself soon so that you can go home. Sending good thoughts your way.

Wow 5 weeks is awesome! Good for you. Sadly I can’t take that kind of time off so I’m just hoping my body works with me and allows me to push through. I’ll be back at work on the 27th. Exactly 1 week later. Do you have a pre-op?

Hi there 6 weeks actually starting next week! It’s very hard following my pre-op diet while at work and stressing about possible exposure to COVID-19. I really don’t want to take any chances of having my surgery postponed. I feel like if I get stir crazy I’ll go back to work. I hope your recovery goes well and you’re able to function at work easily. I work at a prison so there’s a lot of walking unsure if I should rush back? Which surgery are you having? I’m a revision sleeve to DS due to hypothyroidism & pcos.

Oh yeah, definitely with a job like that you should take your time. I’m having a revision, from lap band to sleeve. I’m so ready to get this done, so I understand you not wanting to jeopardize that.

Wow, I didn't realize how hard it would be to sleep through the night. The most I can sleep is 3 hours at a time. My doc prescribed gabapentin (spelling?) and said it would cause drowsiness. Maybe I need to try taking it before bedtime.

Gabapentin definitely helps with falling asleep and staying asleep. I have fibromyalgia, so I took gabapentin at night for almost a decade. People often take it one hour before bedtime, but for me it was best to take it right before bedtime, to help me fall asleep. So maybe you can start by trying taking it one hour before, since that's the most common method.

The first night after the surgery I only slept for 1-2 hours at a time, but last night I slept for 6,5 hours. I do take phenergan at night, which does the same thing as gabepentin, so that helps.

Thanks @ Sunnyer! I appreciate the advice. I'll try that tonight. I'm such a wimp about my sleep.

I start my liquid diet today. I hope I can do this.

You totally can!! ? I’m on day 4. First 3 really were the hardest, but I keep reminding myself why I wanted this! When you get hungry drink water and focus on doing something to take your mind off of it or taking a nap, if you can!! Good luck.

You got this!!

I’m starting day 4 (of 8) today and honestly, so far so good. I haven’t really felt hungry… the protein drinks from my plan have kept me satisfied. I’ve made my water goals every day. Head hunger is real - but manageable. If I had one “complaint” it’s the constant waking at night to go to the bathroom, but if I get my liquids in early enough - it’s manageable.

Best of luck!
