March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Recommended Posts

My surgery was on the 1st. I returned to work (part time light janitorial) this past Monday and feel great! The complication I had ended up being just a small bump in the road to recovery. I've lost about 10 pounds so far. In a few days I get to start soft foods that have more texture to them, so stuff like a soft taco with ground beef and cheese. I'll be on that phase for 6 weeks.

RNY was yesterday. It was rough yesterday during the day but yesterday evening until now, I have been feeling great. Lots of walks around the nurses station and lots of Water. The broth is freakin amazing too.
The walks and water will help make recovery go faster! Keep up the good work.

My surgery was supposed to be tomorrow. My 2 week modified-liquid went great. I was down the 25 pounds my surgeon wanted. I took the required Covid test yesterday and failed! I'm feeling fine, just a minor cold, but the surgery has been put off until June 21. I'm completely devastated. Very sad not to be joining the rest of you March surgery buddies. I'm not sure what the next 90+ days will bring.

I'm so sorry to hear this, such a long wait. I hope you recover quickly

First time in over a week I've had any cravings. I think because it's because I realized, after the call from the hospital today, how close I am, and how I'm going to have to have to commit the long haul from here on out to cutting certain foods from my diet. I'm not even craving sweets (blame the Protein Drinks lol) but a nice bowl of buttery popcorn lol. Ugh. Carbs are my downfall. Always have been.

Oh, that's my kryptonite. I know I'll be able to have it again someday in a modest, reasonable portion, but I sure do miss the buckets of it I used to cram into my mouth! LOL

Let the food funerals commence! Without ruining your progress thus far, of course.

Day 2 of post op. Feeling pretty good. I just have on incision that is swollen and painful but that’s it. Water intake and Protein intake have been going well. I came home yesterday.

Just clocked out of work for the last time. Got final physician approval yesterday and all systems are go for Monday.

Pre-op liquid/protein bar diet has not been bad. Not much hunger except late in the day, but been supplementing with some broth and sugar free Jello and ice pops.

One week off after surgery, followed by one week of computer-based training at work where I'll get to take it easy.

I just started my soft food/puree stage yesterday. I had scrambled egg, tuna w/mayo, scrambled egg with finely chopped deli smoked turkey and american cheese. I'm still deciding on dinner tonight. I am supposed to have 2 shakes and 2 meals per day to ease into the food. So far so good. I think I ate a touch too much of my egg/turkey/cheese combo today but it tasted really good. Probably had one or two bites too much. I did not throw up but my stomach felt very full.

Hi all I go in Monday for surgery so excited a little nervous but not too bad. I’m starting liquid diet tomorrow and Sunday. Any useful tips I be grateful. So happy it’s here doesn’t seem possible. I had it postponed due to the pandemic and had to start from scratch again with classes and all.

Anyone on the puréed stage yet? If so how’s it going and what’re you eating?

I've been on purees for five days now. It's going great, except when I push the limits. (For example, scrambled egg is fine but hard-boiled, even well chewed, was a big nope for now.) I whizzed up some mild chili in the food processor, so that's tasty and easy. My favorite so far is ricotta bake. The weirdest part for me is learning to think of 1/4 cup of food as a meal, and waiting two minutes between pea-sized bites.

I can’t seem to get enough Water. I am excessively thirsty and I haven’t even had the surgery yet. The only thing that has changed is I’m on the high Protein low carb pre op diet. I’m drinking at least 64 oz of water per day and I’m still dry mouth, lips, and literally craving water.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
