9 years post OP and cant eat

Recommended Posts

I am 9 years post op and about a year ago I started vomiting after I ate a few times a week. About 4 months ago I started vomiting everything I ate. I've lost so much weight I look like death. I had an endoscopy done and they said my pouch was almost completely closed and they ballooned it to open it. It was better for 2 weeks and then I started vomiting again. In 4 months I have went from 175 to 120. I have had to leave work and can barely walk around I'm so weak. Has anyone else dealt with this? I finally found a bariatric specialist and will see her soon. But it's killing me that my kids are literally watching me die. I'm so malnourished its crazy

So sorry you are experiencing this. Has anyone suggested other ways of you getting in nutrition in the meantime? My dad had a temporary feeding tube after his stem cell replacement & he couldn’t keep anything down. Sounds scary but it helped build up his strength again & he only had it in for a couple of weeks.

No. That has been the problem. These doctors keep putting me off and giving me no advice other than drink boost/ensure and keep trying to eat. I eat all the time but withing minutes it's right back out. I keep trying though. I refuse to give up I have 3 kids to take care of. It's so hard on them to watch me like this.

Please ask your physician about whether you would benefit from electrolyte drinks such as Pedialyte and Gatorade. The chronic vomiting and malnutrition could cause electrolyte imbalance. Electrolytes play a very important role in your cell and organ functions.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. Keep pestering your doctors and being your own advocate. It can be very hard but don't stop! I agree with @Prestonandme who said to keep your electrolytes up and to make sure you are not getting dehydrated. Also, I agree with your doctors who said to drink Protein Drinks. I hope you find a solution very soon! Keep us posted. 💜

Keep pushing. Every. Single. Day. You clearly need urgent help and it makes me very sad you are not getting help quickly. A feeding tube (J-tube) might be needed to get you some nutrition and I am truly surprised no one seems to have discussed this with you. If you are not getting help, keep going to the ER. Follow up with the bariatric specialist, but you might need a GI specialist for the feeding tube. They are temporary and “easy” to put in/take out.

Hope you feel better soon! 💕

I have been seeing the GI and he did the endoscopy and told me to drink boost and go to the Bariatric dr. I went to 3 ERs and got fluids and sent home and told to see GI or Bariatric dr.

If you live in a small town, your healthcare is likely limited. I recommend heading to a major metro health system for help. Good luck!

Yes I do live in a very small town in TN. I'm going to the city today to see a specialist.

Very sorry your going thru this. It makes me nervous re the surgery. I am 9 months out and although I am not vomiting, I can still only eat about as much as I did at 5-6 months. Very little. I went from 216 to 131 and keep losing. I can't maintain at all. I look very thin and sickly. I haven't got any help from my nutritionist either. I have called my surgeons office and no one has called me back. I am glad to hear that your going to see a specialist. I am looking into getting a new nutritionist myself. Good Luck

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
