MyFitnessPal vs. Baritastic

Recommended Posts

Hi All! I've used MyFitnessPal since 2012 and I really like it but I've noticed a lot of people who have bariatric surgery like Baritastic. Can someone tell me a little about Baritastic and what it might be better for, why I might want to consider it? Pros/cons? Or, if you've tried it and use MyFitnessPal instead, why you don't use Baritastic?

Thanks!

those trackers seem to go in trends - My Fitness Pal has been the big one for a few years - now I, too, am seeing more people use Bariastic. I'm still using SparkPeople, which was "the thing" before MFP came on the scene (I still use it because I've been using it for 7+ years, so I have a long history on it and like looking back at my records). In a basic sense, they're all pretty much the same, so if all you do is log your food intake, any of them would be a fine choice - but newer ones often have new features and sometimes larger databases (although it depends - some trackers that have been around for a long time tend to have pretty sizable databases, too, since users have added a lot to them over the years)

p.s. I don't really care about advanced features. so any tracker with a large database of food would work for me!

I use Cronometer. Does what I want/need it to. Basic food logger with a large database but you can easily add items they don't have listed by just taking a pic of the food items bar code. You can also put in a recipe and it will give you the nutritional info for the recipe/servings/etc. Been using it forever so not sure what other apps do and don't do compared to this one. Used to use My Fitness Pal over 10 years ago but never tried Bariastic.

I use MFP. I briefly tried Baritastic, but I like all the features on MFP better. Plus, it syncs with my watch and my smart scale.

I use Baritastic and MFP, but I’m only still using MFP because I have a decades worth of weight tracking on there

Baritastic is nice because it tracks Protein first, as well as carbs. It also doesn’t give you endless warnings about how you’re eating so few calories. I also like Baritastic for the weight tracking- it breaks the goal up into little chunks so I always feel like I’m making progress, even though I started out almost 200 lbs above my end goal. Basically I’d use both for a while and see which one works better for you.

I prefer Baritastic to MFP. I don’t enjoy tracking. I can do it if I need to but I it’s work to me.

I used MFP for a long time until I was notified that my personal data breached was twice because of the parent company (UnderArmour) was breached. That’s when I stopped using it.

When I needed to track food again I tried Baritastic and found it much easier to use especially the label scan feature (MFP might have this also) I also find the frontend of the Baritastic app more visually appealing.

Totally agree on the front end looking better- I love seeing the little ring moving toward completion. I feel it’s very “goal focused”. MFP and the “feed” is pretty much just ads for me. Maybe it’s different if you have friends. 😬

I do the same. I've used MFP since 2012 and it holds a lot of historic data. But I use Baritastic to track food intake I love that it tells you the 7 day, 30 day and 90 day weight loss/gain trends. Since I'm 6 months post-op and below my goal weight, my husband, children and good friends have really been giving me grief about being too thin, looking unhealthy, looking sickly etc...….

The Baritastic site allows me to share real time information like - "I'm pretty sure I'm in maintenance because I've only lost 0.8 lbs. in the last 7 days" and "I've only lost 3.1 lbs. in the last 30 days" etc. It seems to make the people who care about me feel better that I'm tracking my weight loss with such accuracy.

Not sure if that makes sense, but it works very well for me.

You can see your week, month, 2 months, 3 months, etc on MFP too, at least on the app.

I originally used MFP, but because of their data breaches, I switched to Baritastic, and it's great. I did like that MFP had more foods listed, but it's not that big a deal.
I hate tracking my food, it's a chore, but I've done it consistently for 10 months with Baritastic. It's just part of my routine now.

The data breaches is exactly why I ditched MFP long ago too.

I thought the way MFP handled the breaches were quite good. The hackers got user names, email addresses and passwords only, members were advised fairly quickly and if I remember correctly we forced to changed passwords straight away.

For some companies we don't hear about the data breaches or we don't about them until some months after the company has known.

Unfortunately data breaches are fact of life now, and some companies deal with them better than others. Of importance is acknowledging the breach to users/members/clients, what they do to rectify and mandatory password changes, etc.

I use Baritastic app. It has large food database and barcode scanner. I sync my Baritastic with Renpho scale and Fitbit, so i can track my weight and daily steps. I also track my exercises and bowel movements with it. It has food recipes, timer and reminders for taking Vitamins and Water. Section for tracking BMs has an area for journaling. Baritastic app. is multifunctional and everything in one place. I like its graphics too.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
