Why is this happening???

I'm almost 2 months out from my sleeve. I have lost 42 pounds. The problem is that I am finding that a lot of foods taste yucky to me now.

I totally never expected that. Even foods that I once loved now taste "chemically" to me. I have given up on lots of foods altogether.

My surgeon says he hears this all the time but no good explanation.

Any insights?

Not particularly helpful info on causes/solution, but I found all flavors have intensified for me & I am interested in how it is for others.

I haven’t really noticed any change in taste, and honestly, I’m disappointed. I had hoped my tastes would change because I’ve always been a picky eater, and of course I like foods that are full of carbs and fat (and dislike a lot of healthy foods like vegetables and fish).

The only difference I’ve found is that I seem to have a higher tolerance for spicy foods now. I’ve always been a spice wimp, but I recently made some white chicken chili using the same recipe I always use, and it barely tasted spicy to me. I shared it with someone who like spicy food and remarked that it wasn’t as spicy as usual, and he couldn’t believe I would want it any spicier.

Doesn't feel like that to me. No change here.

Yes, absolutely! I’m 6 wks out RNY and not only are tastes off, but smells are too. eggs now have a slightly wet dog odor to my nose. I gag if I don’t cover them in shredded cheese. It feels quite similar to pregnancy where my stomach and nose were NEVER on the same page. Some consistency’s make me ill as well. Dry chicken, tuna and cod. If I’m honest, I have become a little frustrated with Proteins as the more of them I try, the smaller my options seem.

I have hope that after 8 and 12 weeks my senses will calm a bit.

You can train your taste buds up to a certain degree.

You might never like a food you truly hate hate HATE but you can train yourself to like and even crave foods you're kind of ok-ish with. So what vegetables are you kind ok-ish with?

I found that my tastes for certain foods has changed. For instance pre surgery I could not stand canned sardines or mackerel or liver Today I can eat them with no problem. Others I know have sworn off certain foods that they ate pre op. It's something that affects some but not all and for the most part cannot be explained.

Now that I think about it I had some temporary aversion to everything tofu and soy yoghurt. It lasted about 7 or 8 months or so.

I don't mind green Beans, cucumber, iceberg or romaine lettuce, Tomato, carrots, celery, broccoli, artichoke, and asparagus. I hate cauliflower (although I'm weirdly ok with cauliflower rice if I add sauce and mix-ins), bell peppers, squash, mushrooms, cabbage, weird lettuce (dandelion greens, kale, arugula, etc.), and brussels sprouts (and probably a lot of others that aren't coming to mind at the moment).

Most likely if you start eating these foods more regularly you might finally start to crave them. It might be more subtle than the craving for higher palatable foods but it's going to be there.

Struggling to find things to eat at 10 weeks out from RNY. chicken and beef make me so sick I just have horrible pain and throw up over and over. I am eating greek yogart, snow crab legs and some Soups .. green pea and barley. I eat salad with diet dressing and peeled green apples. I snack on chick peas, soy Beans and small pretzel sticks. If I try to drink Protein Drinks it makes me sick and I struggle drinking anything but herbal tea. Anyone know if it will change in the future? Are you able to ever drink and not sip Water? Are you ever able to eat normal meat again?

Wondering if it gets better .... is it that i don't chewy enough ?

I'm also experiencing this. It's like everything I taste has more flavor. Like I thought chicken broth was delicious yesterday. This is kind of a cool side effect.

The same happening to me I lost all flavor and I don't have cravings anymore at the beginning I thought it was awesome but know 2 years later is become an issue because I can no longer enjoy eating.

My spice level preference has increased some. chicken thighs are the only chicken I can eat now and I was an avid chicken eater pre WLS.

I must say that I do find myself craving things I wouldn’t have before surgery like cabbage, butternut squash, and kimchi.

A couple months after I had my VSG I cried in the grocery store parking lot because they didn’t have any grape Powerade zero as that and tea was the only liquids I could keep down. After my revision though that got so much better and I’m not sure why. But I do only use a half packet of crystal light in a 16oz bottled Water now. 🤷‍♀️

I don't know what causes that, but it sounds like a good thing. You won't overeat if you don't like the taste. Steers you toward Protein options. I dunno.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
