Had Surgery Yesterday - Can Drink and Swallow Normally?!

Recommended Posts

Hey ya'll, I had gastric bypass yesterday morning, and after I recovered from the anesthesia I could swallow and drink a normal amount of fluids just like I always have, what is going on?!

I am worried that maybe they did the sleeve instead of the bypass because the nurses and even the surgeon kept saying 'sleeve' and then I would say, 'no, I should be getting the bypass' and then they'd correct themselves and say they meant bypass.

Anyway, I'm just really concerned why I am recovering so fast and able to drink gulps and fit as much Fluid as I want, which has been a lot since my mouth has been super dry since I woke up from surgery. I also went vegan recently, which I knew would help with inflammation and my blood vessels and such, but I did not expect to recover so easily and so quickly and it's freaking me out a bit.

I had trouble even with fluids at first - couldn't drink much at a time. But not everybody does - especially if you got the bypass - the sleeve can be worse. Once you get to real food, you'll probably start feeling it more. In the meantime, thank your lucky stars!

I thought the exact same thing after my surgery! I was afraid I'd gotten the sleeve instead of the bypass, but I can't remember why I thought that. Anyway, I also had no trouble getting fluids in after surgery and wondered if something was wrong. But no - I was fine!

Oh thanks, that helps!

So glad I’m not alone, I got out of the hospital today. I was worried something was wrong. My recovery has been amazing and the only way I knew I’d had surgery was my stomach is sore.

Well, after feeling like I was doing great on Clear Liquids and living on vegetable broth, popsicles, and Water (cuz I'm vegan) I decided to try some of my clear Protein Powder since I was feeling kinda hungry. Nope, went right through me. :/ I thought I had this, and now I'm worried about how I'm gonna get any Protein in. Guess I need to heal more or something. Ugh, this is such a stressful stage.

I never had problems with fluids. It varies from patient to patient. Surgeons were very pleased that I could manage Fluid intake from the beginning on without problems.

Sleeve patients seem to have a harder time with fluids first.

Had revision on 5/27 and couldn’t get liquids down. I had the same issues with the sleeve though even years out. Water bothered me all the time. Had to do sips all the time. Other liquids not so much.
I just had lapro again yesterday as some of the scar tissue was giving me an issue. Was only 2 weeks. I hope this was just a fluke.

Today I tried to get some Protein in again since yesterday didn't go so well. I just did 2 scoops, which was 10 g of protein and it seems to be sticking thank goodness. Yesterday I tried 20 g in 1 drink and it went in one end and out the other. So, each day is making a difference in this healing/transition process this first week.

Hi
Do you think it’s the amount of Protein that’s giving you an issue? Wonder why. Too rich!? I have 30g of protein in my shake. Did with the sleeve and now with bypsss. Mind you I’m only about 2 1/2 weeks out from my Bypass and split it with two meals for now. Could it be the flavor?. Is it mixed with Water? I oddly enough find that cookie and cream give me a stomach ache.

FYI, almost all surgeons perform a pre-surgery checklist that includes verifying the identity of the patient and the surgery to be performed, so it is very, very unlikely that they could have performed the wrong surgery. When I was in the hospital, every single doctor or nurse who talked to me asked my name, date of birth, and what surgery I was getting and checked my hospital Bracelet and chart to make sure everything matched. They may not remember which surgery each patient is getting off the top of their heads, but they typically have pretty strict requirements to check the documentation multiple times before they start cutting.

Ive read that fluids experience is different than solids so it may all slow down when you get to solids

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
