My surgery is scheduled June 17th. I started my pre op surgery diet on the June 3rd. I have lost 40 lbs since my journey started in Aug 2019. I heard about people grieving food and I am starting to feel sad about the some of the food (maybe the amount) I can not have after surgery.

What are your thoughts? Did you experience a food funeral?

You will eventually be able to eat more food just not for a while but honestly I don't even think about food as much as i used to

I miss some things, but surprisingly not that many. Heck, we've had a few birthdays in our family since my surgery and I watch other people eat cake, but didn't have any myself. It looked delicious, but it didn't really bother me that I couldn't have a slice. My family brought fruit salads for me each time and I ate that instead and was perfectly happy. You don't really crave food like before. Or at least I don't. Though... I dreamed of bread the other day lol. I kid you not! I told my nutritionist about it and she laughed and told me I could add low carb tortilla's into my diet if I really want to now that I'm 4 months post op! 🤣

although there are a lot of restrictions the first few months, you'll eventually be able to eat most foods again - just in smaller portions. The only thing my body really rejects anymore are really high-fat meals For example, my husband and I used to love going out to Friday night fish fries where they give you two or three pieces of fried cod, a mound of French fries, and cole slaw. If I ate that now, I'd be in the bathroom throwing up afterward. I could maybe eat half a fried fish filet now, but that's it (volume-wise I can eat more than that now, but more fat than that, no). YMMV, though - I know people who are years out who can't eat ice cream anymore (unfortunately, I CAN eat ice cream..),so it varies depending on the person, but for the most part, you'll eventually be able to eat most things again.

Yes, definitely. :D

I don't know if I would deem it "unnecessary" now since I can eat most of the foods I like, just in smaller amounts. I do have some intolerances though, e. g. dairy or foods very high in fat with the combo of fat/protein being the hardest on my stomach.

Even after such a long time I sometimes miss being able to eat large amounts of food. It's usually the case when there is some sponsored invitation to some fancy dinner and everyone is eating like there won't be any food available anymore tomorrow for a week or so. That comes around maybe two or three times a year though so I don't deem it a real problem.

With the exception of intolerances that for sure can build up or were present even before surgery: when people are talking about "not being able to have this food" or "can't have this food" most of the time they mean that these foods aren't "allowed", are "forbidden or "off-limits" within the frame of their chosen diet.

So in theory most likely you'll be able to have your favorite foods. Of course you can still choose not to eat them or to only eat them occasionally.

People handle food, diet, exercise, "problem situations with food" very differently and with different mindsets behind their actions. In the end you'll have to find your own way and it doesn't matter what your coworkers, your mother, aunt Fanny or uncle Bob's best friend have to say about it.

food funerals seem super necessary when you think you'll never have something again but in reality you probably will have those things again in the future

Either way

Congratulations so far!

I’m 8 days post-op and miss the act of enjoying a meal more than I thought I would. I definitely have cravings already, but not enough to actually go out and try to eat them (and potentially make myself sick). It just would be nice to be able to have them is all. But, I honestly think it’s simply because I cant have solid food yet and because I have very little actual hunger at this stage. I say that because looking at a picture of a plate of grilled chicken w/a side of Tomato & mozzarella salad and grapes is ALMOST as equally appealing to me as looking at a cheesesteak.

Yes, I definitely had a 4-week long food funeral. I ate every single thing I wanted...in whatever quantity. Fortunately for me, my surgery did not require pre-op weightloss and weigh-ins until 2 weeks beforehand, so I could do so. I buckled down 2.5 weeks pre-op however and did great.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
