So I’m in the pre op phase and as I get closer to getting my surgery date .... I’m becoming increasingly excited about losing weight and being slim again!! I feel kinda bad about being so excited... my reason for getting the surgery is not purely weight-loss. I have type 2 diabetes that is under control but I’m sick of taking medication, also inner cranial hypertension. I’m 5”3 and 200 pounds with a BMI of 34.5 ... so I know I won’t be losing more then 100 pounds at most. Yet and still .. all I can think about is getting back to my high school weight ... so am I a horrible person ?

Of course you aren't a horrible person! You care enough about your health that you will be undergoing WLS. If you mean are you horrible for worrying about whether or not you'll reach your high school weight, well, that's not horrible either, but I think you'll find after your surgery that you won't obsess about your final weight, especially since you won't have to lose much until you feel much better, and your diabetes should ease up dramatically!

After your surgery you'll have other things to worry about, like all the cute new clothes you'll have to buy!

Weight loss isn't necessarly all about health, its about how we look and feel too. Know that sometimes a low high school weight isn't achievable for some (a lot?) of people. At that age people haven't fully developed and their weight is that of a teenager not an adult.

For instance I kind of get a feeling your goal weight is 100lb or perhaps less. At your height 100lb gives a BMI of 17.7 which is actually underweight, so a goal weight less than 100lb would put you more underweight.

I am in the pre-op phase as well. I want to lose weight to be healthy, where I can do things that I couldn't before and be able to have children that I can keep up with, etc. However, I think we are all a bit vain to some extent and really want our bodies to look good, too! I can't wait to be able to wear cute clothes, walk by a full-sized mirror and check myself out instead of hurrying by so I don't have to see it anymore.

So, no, I don't think you're a horrible person and you're definitely not alone in those feelings!

@hop_scotch oh no my goal is 135-140!!! I’ve never been a 100 pounds in high school lol. Would like to lose about 65-70 pounds or so.

Heck no you're not a horrible person. Feeling better about the way you look is a nice side effect to the health benefits of losing the weight. Remember, "healthy" includes your mental status too! Good luck on your journey!

I had zero health issues from my weight, so my motivation was 90% vanity. I certainly don't think I am a horrible person.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
