Liquid poo after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I had a revision from VSG to RNY bypass on Monday, 1/13/20. I had major complications with the VSG, and that was the only option.

I ended up with a pinched nerve in my left shoulder due to the position my arm was in during the long surgery, so I’ve been on painkillers a bit longer than planned.

Enough back story! Today I’m on full liquids for my seconds day. Not my first time at the rodeo with the graduated diet. However, I’m having liquid poo. Cannot trust a fart (lol)! Is this a concern that I should call the dr’s line over the weekend for, or is this a common issue? I go back to his office first thing Tuesday to get my drain out. That’s the first time they’re open again.

I feel your pain. Just a thought ... were you given laxatives in hospital? They are super strong. I got up on day three to pee & ... gush mid shuffle. Yikes. No warning & a hideous smell. Had to throw out my knickers & shower. I threw those MFs out immediately.

But I’d still call the doctor’s line to be sure.

overall Constipation is way more common than diarrhea, but to be honest, I can't remember what it was like during the liquid diet phase. Although I suspect I would have remembered if I had bad diarrhea. Could it be the lactose or the artificial sweeteners in the shakes? Or artificial sweeteners in general? Those give a lot of people the runs. If you're worried, call your clinic....

Update: Never mind - you're talking post-surgery, not pre-surgery. I definitely had constipation issues post-surgery, not diarrhea. Lactose intolerance isn't all that uncommon after surgery - it's often temporary, but not always. Or again, artificial sweeteners.

I did too, I’m almost 2 months out. I had an upper GI test and that also contributed but yes I wouldn’t be too concerned unless you’re becoming dehydrated but I had the same for about a week but it became normal after haha

This^^^^ was my experience as well. I drank Powerade zero to counteract.

i became normalish after about 1.5 weeks. Now I deal with Constipation.

I alternated between severe Constipation and diarrhea in the weeks after surgery. I thought things would never return to some semblance of normal.

I had that for the first day after my sleeve.

My friend had it after her sleeve so I had even bought some bed pads. Thankfully I didn't need them. Unless you get dehydrated or it goes on for more than a few days, I think it's pretty normal.

They gave me a ton of different anti-nausea drugs in the hospital. It felt like every time I turned around they were putting another in my IV! I think things might be normalizing now. When I went from clear to full liquids, I think I drank some Isopure too quickly. I hate that stuff & just wanted it over with!

I’m noticing this time around that recovery is much harder on my body.

I too had a problem of very liquidy bowel movements for several weeks post-op, but once I started on a probiotic it got wayyyy better. Much more solid and not afraid to pass gas!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
