2 months after surgery still can’t eat much

Recommended Posts

My Surgery was 11/4/19. I’m still having issues with eating. I’m either not hungry or what I fix just doesn’t taste good. I feel like maybe I wait to long before I eat. I drink my Protein Drink and I’m full all day. Sometimes I eat something today I’m fine the eat the same thing tomorrow and I throw up. My surgeon says you’ll get there. Anyone else had a hard time eating 2 months after surgery???

Absolutely normal. I was only eating/drinking 500 cal/day at 2 months. You are still healing, and it is a very difficult transition time. Some days you can eat certain foods, and other days the same foods are just intolerable. Work on eating slowly, and listening to your body. You don't have to force anything at this point. Just get your Protein, fluids, and Vitamins down and you will be fine.

That's a GOOD problem to have. You don't want to be hungry, that's why you had the surgery in the first place, to get rid of your hunger hormone. Drinking Protein Shakes will work just fine. Don't rush the process. You'll be grateful later.

This is the honeymoon period where you don't have much of an appetite. Make the most of it and enjoy it while you can! My appetite is starting to come back, and I wish it wasn't!😁

I have tried to eat a few bites of tuna in the pouch. I did make some taco Soup. I ate some the first few days then I didn’t want it. Sometimes I get a little hungry. I’m still doing shakes and the sugar free popsicles. They are heaven when you can eat lol. They told me at Christmas I could eat a little to enjoy the day. I did have a little ham some Beans I did fine. I only ate a few bites. Took some home and a few days later couldn’t eat it. I saw where someone was eating hummus so I bought some to try. Believe me I’m not rushing anything. My sister had this done in 2004. She gained a little back and said she can eat what she wants just in smaller portions. She said she still can’t process any sugar. Which is a good thing.
thanks for everyone’s comments. It helps to have other people to talk to while going through the process. I started out at 302 in June 2019, surgery 11/4. Im down to 244 I’ve lost about 33 since surgery. My dr said my goal is 10 lbs a month and I’m reaching that goal. Going to sign up to go back to the gym. I can’t wait.

The nutritionist says that this surgery doesn’t get rid of hunger. It’s all in how we decide to deal with it. I get hungry but I do try and nibble on things I can try. I wanted candy the other day. I bought sugar free caramel candy. I ate one and I was completely satisfied. My sister says it all about choices and making the right ones. I’m still mostly on Protein Shakes and sugar popsicles. The shrimp last week was the best treat.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
