for what it's worth, all the research says that you really shouldn't be exercising until 6 months out because you're not consuming enough calories to make your workouts worth it. You're just depleting your body. My surgeon only recommends walking swimming and biking

Is that research for both VSG and RNY ? My sleeve surgeon told me to start light weights at 6 wks. to break my stall ? :)

During my one week check up my surgeon said I would probably lose about a pound a day for the first three months. Each surgeon/practice is different from what I have seen, but the basic principles remain the same. Get your Protein and Water in at first. Then you can expand your menu when you move to the full foods phase.

What r ur food stages? I also started at a BMI of 43? And I think the higher the BMI the fast u lose weight. Is what I have gathered.

My surgeon is a great surgeon but some of her post-op instructions do have me puzzled. She told me today I can do full exercise and not just walking. Not listening to that advice. I actually started making my shakes with 4 0z Half&half and cooking my egg or tofu with butter and immediately started losing again after not losing a single pound for my entire third week so that tells me I wasn’t getting enough fat while doing 3 shakes and 1 egg. Thank you for your advice. Really appreciate it.

It's for all bariatric surgery. Do you ever watch Doctor v? This is a good watch if nothing else

Yea of course.

So in the hospital I was allowed Clear Liquids and my Protein Shakes which where ensure max Protein.

Also the first 6 weeks they push that they do not wnat us eating low carb. They do recommend sugar free for sweets so that you don’t “dump.”

So when released we can have full liquids and some purées Soups Beans ricotta cheese etc.

then on our one week post op appointment. We are allowed all soft foods. Just not meats yet.

Two weeks we can have soft food plus like soft cheeses, fish ground meats

Three weeks we can have lunch meat and cheese roll ups cheddar cheese etc.

week four post op we can have cucumber and tuna boats etc.

6 week normal eating

they just push to listen to our bodies. Obviously if your new belly is not liking something don’t eat it.

Also they don’t push for extreme amounts of Protein because our body can only absorb so much. They recommend the first 6 weeks 45-55 grams of protein a day. They also don’t resend working out really hard until after the honey moon phase. Because our bodies are not taking in enough calories to work out. After about 6 months when we can consume enough calories. Then we can work out and work on building elan muscle not cardio since our bodies are still in a huge deficient.

Also they said if we r in the habit of working out. Then we can but this is just what they recommend for the best results. As per there program.

My surgeon also said. If I want to explore with a food eat a tiny bite and see how it “hits” my stomach. Like the first time eating salad. Eat a bite. Wait and see how your stomach reacts. Etc

Wow!! It’s the complete opposite of what my surgeon says, but everything your surgeon wrote is what I felt I should be doing for my body because I know my body will hang on to every calorie if I’m not eating enough. Thank you so much for this info!!

When I started in July 2019 my BMI was 61. My surgeon wanted me to get down to a BMI of 50 to make surgery easier on me. On day of surgery my BMI was 48. Today it is 45. Here are my four phases

Phase one - two weeks - full liquids 45 grams of Protein. Phase two - two weeks - pureed foods 60 grams of protein. Phase three - two weeks soft foods 60 grams of protein. Phase four - advance to regular diet adding one new food at a time to see how it is tolerated goal of 80 grams of protein per day.

My post op is pretty similar. I'm day 5 and from. Now until the 9th (three weeks) I'm on liquids, strained Soups, thinned cream of wheat, Protein Shakes. On the 9th which is three weeks, I can start soft foods.

I like doctor V but he tells it how it is so warning for anyone that is sensitive. I love it because I am straightforward also! My surgeon also agreed with a lot of his info.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
