Pre-Op RNY - No NSAIDS for one week

Recommended Posts

I have hip and knee arthritis and 6 more days until my surgery. I’m in excruciating pain because I can’t take any NSAIDS. Anyone have any suggestions on how to endure the pain for the next few days. I can barely walk to the restroom or get in and out of bed. Any thoughts/suggestions are appreciated.

See if your surgeon will permit a topical NSAID for your knees. I have arthritis and am allowed to use Diclofenac topical. It actually works! But won't help a large area like your hips. Great for my fingers, knees, and ankles, however. And yes, lots of Tylenol. lol. Will never be the same as an NSAID, though.

Tylenol arthritis 650mg sustained release. One in am one in pm and if needed 1mid day. Then a constant level of pain management.Or short term your PCP can do 2 Percocet a day or Tramadol with a known diagnosis of arthritis

Thanks, everyone! My PCP gave me Voltaran topical cream, which is helping my knees. She also prescribed oxcycodone and later increased the dosage to help with the hip pain. I’m also taking Tylenol extra strength, applying ice and heat. I’m still in a great deal of pain, but I will make it through the weekend to surgery on Monday.

CBC oil? It takes a couple days of dosing to notice a difference though so it may not help right away but could keep the pain manageable post op as well.

Hearing a lot of good things about. CBC oil, isn't too bad it might take a couple days to be effective, there are only a few instant satisfaction/ relief. things these days. Maybe like opiods they are trying to get rid of instant relief😪

@FunkyMunkeyBrat, yes we discussed which procedure to do at length because of my arthritis issues. My doctor strongly recommends I stop Naproxen. He said I could try Celebrex, as it is not as harsh on the stomach as naproxen. If that doesn’t work, there are very few other options for me. I know I’ll be getting cortisone shots as soon as possible after surgery. And, I know that a hip replacement and double knee replacement are in my future. That’s part of my motivation for losing the weight. I need to lose at least 80 pounds in order to have the replacement procedures.

Yeah.. I had Lyme Disease which caused Lyme induced arthritis in both my hips.. It was horrible.. Bone on bone.. I had gained weight because of the Lyme.. I was always heavy but was able to be active then I couldn't.. So I was at a point where I knew it was time to get serious.. I knew I was going to have to have both hips replaced but knew there was no way I was doing that at 340#s.. So had the surgery.. Lost 120.. Had both hips replaced and that was EVERYTHING.. Gave me life back! I hope you're able to find some relieve.. Do your hip first.. It's such an easy recovery!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
