At my goal weight a week away from 7 months post-op

Recommended Posts

Up until this point I have been very happy with my progress. However, at times I feel like i'm losing too much too fast. I have currently hit my goal weight of 165 lbs.(i'm actually 164 lbs.) and before hitting it, I thought of changing it to 145 lbs. I looked at myself in the mirror this morning and didn't recognize the reflection that was looking back at me, because I hadn't taken the time to really really look at myself before today. Anyone else going through this?

First off congratulations on your success! I am not scheduled for surgery until feb 4 but stories like yours are an inspiration!
Thank you so much. I really need to post more. I've just been on the go so much, that I often forget. Trying to give more updates now though. Congratulations on your surgery date! Keep us updated on your progress!

Fantastic work getting to goal. Celebrate big!

Your not alone. It takes time for your mind to catch up because your weight loss is so rapid. Some of us have a distorted body image. It may take some work to see your reflection/size correctly.

After I got to goal, a vet gave me some things to try.

  • Place a current photo of yourself your bathroom mirror. Look at it as you are getting ready for the day.
  • This may sound ridiculous, Go out in a public place with a friend. Have them give you examples of people that share your weight and body type. It's not that you are judging and pointing at people (please don't do that) Its to wrap your mind around your new size.
  • For some, it may become body dysmorphia. Counseling/therapy is a great option.

Give it time. Your mind should catch up. Your reflection will become normal.

Glad you posted. It will help prepare others as they get closer to goal. It's strange to experience this for yourself, Right?

Thank you for the advice! I'm definitely going to have to try it, because I almost felt like a sack of meat scraps when I looked in the mirror. Literally isn't much left to me, but a bit of extra skin in a couple places.

Yes, it's very strange. I thought I had mentally prepared myself well enough. I was wrong. I wasn't prepared for things to be so rapid and dramatic.

Remind yourself you are at 164. You are at a healthy weight. If you choose to goto 145 you are still at a healthy BMI. Find a weight that you feel comfortable to maintain.

Most people don't know what a healthy BMI looks like. People may give you comments that are less than helpful Some comments you may hear, (even at a healthy BMI) "Stop losing weight" "Your too thin" "do you have cancer?"

Weight loss comments and compliments will stop after your weight settles. This is the point body image may be easier to deal with. It's a great feeling when people just accept this is you. Life becomes more normal.

That's true, a lot of people don't understand what a healthy BMI is (some don't even know what a BMI is). I already hear people telling me I have lost too much weight and I shouldn't lose anymore. Today is the first day I could really see myself though. Before I was looking at myself thinking my weight loss was going good, but I wasn't fully looking at myself. I can see how much smaller my face, neck, feet, hands, legs and arms really really have gotten. I just have to remember that I did this for the right reason, which is I want to live and have a healthy life. Not really worried about what friends and family think about the choice I made, because they weren't in my shoes.

Oh ugh, this. I am still at an overweight BMI and someone said I look too thin. Ironically it is a woman here at work that is pretty thin herself.

Last week two different people asked me what type of plastic surgery I was going to need after all this weight loss. Gee, thanks.

I know people mean well but losing this much weight is an adjustment in itself...keep your comments to yourself.

@AlteredRealityyou look beautiful and congratulations. 🎊

Many times people are so used to seeing us at obese BMI weights that when we lose weight it makes it more drastic, maybe even to our own eyes.

Thank you so much. I wish people would have more consideration and try to be understanding, when it comes to talking to people that have undergone WLS

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
