7 weeks post op and not hungry

Recommended Posts

I am 7 weeks post op, I have lost 40 pounds since I surgery, and I have no appetite at all. It is a chore to eat, and I have to force myself to eat. Nothing tastes good, and I'm just trying to desperately get my Protein in. Anyone else have this issue?

No, I'm 5 weeks post-op and hungry every 3 hours or so and eat something very small, 1-2 oz, every 3 hours or so.

yep - I lost my appetite for five months. Take FULL advantage of that - it'll never, ever be easier to lose weight than it will right now. For most of us, our appetite/hunger comes roaring back sometime within the first year, and things get a lot harder then.

I'm at 12 weeks post op and 68lbs gone. I also have to force myself to eat. Most things dont taste good. Very hard to get in my Protein. They say it just takes time.

I had a similar problem. I had a staple come loose and got stuck right above my pouch which caused me to have an ulcer. I had no appetite and could only hold maybe 2 oz at a time. After I got that fixed I feel so much better.

I too am almost 7 weeks post op and I do get hungry, but nothing like hunger before surgery. My problem is I have zero restriction and never get a full sensation. I feel exactly the same after my meals as I did before I eat. I wait an hour before and after eating to drink. I get about 100 oz Water in a day. I’m hoping down the road I get some sort of fullness feeling after eating. I always feel empty.

I've heard from others that you don't have sensations at first because your nerves have been cut - which does make sense. That said, at 3.5 years out, I don't get the same "full" sensation that I did pre-surgery. It's hard to explain, but I just know when it's time to stop eating. I start feeling uncomfortable, and I know from experience that if I try to eat more, I'm probably going to get sick.

I'm 3+ years out and I still don't get hungry... if I don't eat on a schedule I forget to eat and then end up with low blood sugar. I remember the taste issue as well but that came back for me after a few months.

I hoped and prayed that I would be one of the lucky ones, like you, but no - my hunger came back at five months out. Boo.

90% of my hunger is "head hunger." I'm 2 weeks post OP and rarely feel true hunger (the stomach growling, aching hunger, the way hunger is SUPPOSED to feel when it is real).

As far as Protein, I'm getting plenty!!! I highly recommend a tasteless powder by "Genepro: next generation protein powder." The scoop is much smaller and you get a full 30 grams of protein. Plus it's less calories than most: 60 calories. I even put a scoop in my Water, for real. I taste a hint of it but it is a clean, very mild taste. Add it to your broth if you're drinking that. You might try that. Powdered skim milk, Peanut Butter powder. Oikos zero Greek yogurt. All good options!

How are you doing now? I am currently 7 weeks post op and have been horribly nauseous the past few weeks. It doesn’t matter what I eat or drink. I am having an even harder time to get my Protein in. Everyone just keeps saying it takes time for you body to heal. I am just tired of feeling like 💩. I have lost 45 lbs but only a lb or two in the last few weeks, sometime I even gain a few pounds, which is weird when you can’t keep anything down.

are you RNY or VSG? Either way, you should let your clinic know. That's not normal. If you're RNY, it could possibly be a stricture (if so, easy fix...). Just give them a call and let them know what's going on - if you haven't already.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
