What do you guys think about starting a new thread with the parameters right in the title? Something like "Sophomoreville - 6-18 months out" or similar? I'm realizing a lot of people might see these posts in their feed and never read the first page and pitch in directly from there, I've seen it happen with people accidentally posting in Vets. Or edit the title of this thread, if that's possible.

I just read the first page and finally understand the context of this thread. It is a huge need in this forum, in my opinion.

I'm about a year out and entering maintenance, but I'm finding there's not a good spot on this forum for that kind of conversation. The post-op forum is dominated by people in the initial post-op stage (first six months: OMG gas pains, "OMG it's been 2 weeks and I've only lost 20 pounds," 6 week stall freakouts, going through the progressing of food stages, etc.), and the Veteran's Forum doesn't allow you until you are 18 months post-op.

In all honesty, I think a six month to 18 months Forum would be more used than an 18 months plus veterans Forum, the latter seems to not have much activity as most of those veterans move on by that point anyway.

I reckon if you are only eating 1/2-3/4c of food per each of 2-3 meals? You can eat whatever you want! :D Especially when you're at goal girlie!!! Looks yum!

You know, if I stuck to eating 2-3 meals, and no snacking or drinking, then I agree, I would still have a pretty large calorie deficit everyday. But what I have begun to do is snack, eat because food tastes good vs. because I'm hungry or to get my Protein in. For instance, under normal circumstances, an hour or so later I would have finished the pasta/corn/cheese. I didn't this time because I was busy trying to work and finish packing, then head over to boo's house. Also because posting made me more conscience.

I guess the good news is I still don't have a lot of real hunger. So when I need to reign in my eating because I'm seeing gains, I should be able to eat stuff I want, just as long as I'm eating it when I'm hungry vs. cravings. That's what I'm hoping at least.

Amusingly, I read this as "I've been making sharing good food on dates seem sexy", because that's what I'm focused on: eating very small portions of the food I WANT TO EAT without making things all awkward.

The problem isn't picking what I eat, at 9+ months that's down pat - I know what portion and content I need to get, and how those two balance out. But taking the example of diner Breakfast, I was out with two friends from out of state. I didn't realize that they'd probably pick up the bill (I drove us all over the place) so when I looked at the menu, I did the exact thing you would - looked at the side of eggs, because if food is fuel that ticks the boxes. But then I thought "No, I really don't want that - what I want is the cinnamon apple pancakes with sausage", knowing full well that I'd be able to eat a few forkfuls of each and a couple sips of coffee, but also knowing we'd linger for a couple hours. So I ordered it, again knowing that I was ordering $10 worth of food and likely to eat $2 of it (we were headed to a hospital after and there would be absolutely no reason to take it to go). What I DIDN'T really clock was that my cash-strapped friend would pick up the bill.

So personally, I am completely fine with either ordering a side or ordering a full meal and only eating the bits I want. But I do notice that it's a little distressing for everyone involved. If I don't order enough, then they get self-conscious about ordering a lot. And if I don't eat the whole thing, the money/food waste kind of crops up. And that's not even getting into the waiters who go into a panic when they have to bring back a nearly-full plate to the kitchen and want an explanation for the chef.

I agree with all this. I almost always order what I want, irregardless of waste. The only exceptions is at fine dining (i.e. expensive) restaurants, I won't order the $60 steak, or the $45 halibut because that just seems over the top wasteful. So I'll have an app or a less expensive main. And near home I'll often choose food that makes better leftovers than something I want more but will reheat poorly.

I think the real key to this is the cash strapped friend picking up the bill. Those few bites were totally worth $10 to you, but were an expensive few bites from your friend's viewpoint. To me it feels more like guilt over economic disparity, and the food waste is just a proxy.

Yes, the waiter questions about "did you like the food" kill me more than anything. I'm over it with people I'm close to, including customers or collegues. But on early dates, or work meals where I don't know them well, ugh, it makes it awkward for everyone. Why don't the waiters recognize that?

Favor to ask .... can the contributors here bump this thread?

Apparently @Orchids&Dragons is getting a message she is banned when she tries to log in. As those of us who know her, that makes zero sense!

Ok, all you little Pasta lovers who are low carb. Quick, go buy these!!! Ermagerd! This is a cross post to a thread in the Post Op food section. I also did a review. LOL. Seriously, I NEVER do reviews (almost never).

So. Dang. Good!!!

Ok guys!! I was about to post my own thread on these noodles I got in the BP store: Zeroodles with Oat Fiber (Spaghetti and Angel hair shapes).

I've loved and used Shirataki noodles for years as part of our low carb life. My fave shapes are angel hair, linguini, spaghetti, and "rice" which are more like the shape of Israeli Cous Cous. But other brands are packed in a Calcium hydroxide bath or something like that -- which smells fishy. So you pour that off, rinse like hell, then tump em into a dry non-stick pan on high heat to jump around and sizzle until all moisture is cooked off. Then you add your favorite sauce to them. Yummy!!! Or put em into Soup or a casserole. So good. But still, you had to deal with the initial smell, and they had more of a seaweed crunch.

But the Zeroodles with Oat Fiber are amazing!!! You get 2x or more as much quantity of noodles as you do from other brands. They are almost dry-packed, so no smell! And so easy to make. We still rinse and dry fry until very dry, but that takes literally 5 minutes. Then we use with sauce or in soup! Score!!!! So dang good. I'm ordering more this week!

The texture on these is so much better. The oat fiber adds a softer, almost zero crunch chew! It's also very good for you. They are both soluble fiber and help you gut microbiome and health! Soluble fiber also helps improve your cholesterol ratios in favor of the good cholesterol! So it's really healthy.

I would just caution, that you need to be healed from surgery first and be able to get your Protein in--cuz they are filling. Your bowels also need to be moving well. And you need to remember to eat slowly, small bites, and to chew very well!

I have no problemos digesting them and I've had an RNY.

I'm in love! I'm in love! And I don't care who knows!!!! :D

Good to know @FluffyChix. I have some of those in my pantry but have be hesitant to use them due to the off putting smell of other Shirataki noodles I've had.

As of December 18th I am 7 months out. My HW 246, GW 160, CW 152!! The things I need to work on now is snacking (I try to do healthy snacking, but it don’t always happen that way)! I haven’t gotten to crazy with it but, my thoughts are I don’t want to go back to the way I used to be! I go to the gym straight after work at least 3 days a week, but during long breaks I don’t go because my job and gym are an hour away (which sucks) but living out in the country I have no other choice! So my next step is to find some exercise, weight training and yoga I can and will do at home!! This is extremely important to me!! The next thing is to continue looking and finding healthy recipes that I love and to learn to meal prep!! The only thing is I don’t like many kinds of left over meat!! Like they said the hard work really begins when you begin trying to maintain and knowing you can’t go back to the way things were and expect different results!! Hair loss is a big thing for me, which most people say they can’t tell it but they just don’t know what I have to do to my scalp (in the front and a little on the sides) to cover up these thin spots!! That spray on cover color is my best friend at the moment!! Happy New Year to all of you and I hope 2019 will be an even better year for you!!!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
