Feeling resentful, missing my favorite foods

Recommended Posts

I am 3 months post op and I too was upset that I could no longer eat my fave foods. I went through a period about 6 -9 weeks post op where I ate a lot of sugar, ice cream, chocolate, cake, Cookies etc. and then gradually I settled down. I no longer crave the sugar and what used to be my fave foods. I now have new fave foods and I’m developing healthy eating habits. Your taste buds change but I think it’s more a mental thing rather than a physiological thing. I don’t know what the science is behind it. Hang in there. You’ll find a happy place soon.
@brassapple thank you for sharing. It's definitely a mental thing for me right now. I sure hope I can push through this soon.

I’m almost five weeks out and I’m having the first ‘down’ moments. I made a bariatric recipe for dinner and had the smallest portion and yet I puked it right up 🤮 I’m tired of not eating. I’m tired of chest pain. I’m tired of throwing up. I want coffee [emoji477]️ I’m tired of not being able to chug Water for heavens sake[emoji844] agh .... I think I’m pushing myself and just need to go back to the basics. I just want to be on the other side of this, but I know I have to do the work. [emoji24][emoji24][emoji24]
@sassysleever I knew the journey would be hard but I guess I didn't fully anticipate the mental anguish

I feel the same way. I was sleeved on August 17th. I miss food very much. I miss McDonald's and pizza and sweets and Snacks and chips and Pasta. I miss it all!!! Sometimes I wonder why I did this. It does suck. But I lost 20lb since the surgery. It’s been 3.5 weeks. I just keep going. The problem is that I want these foods, but I know my belly will not like it! Just eating turkey, my belly is gurgling and it feels heavy in my belly. At least I can drink my milk! I love milk [emoji7] it’s like my dessert
@jultrim18 my surgery was Aug 15th so you and I are pretty much in the same phase of this journey. I've only lost 14 lbs, 10 just in the first week because I couldn't keep anything down, wound up back to the Doctor's for IV fluids. I still struggle to get to my Protein and Water goals. The physical and mental anguish is more than I was prepared for it seems.

We always mourn something we used to love and had to give up. Your feelings are valid but thank goodness will pass. I’m four weeks out and I have discovered a strange new energy for cooking all kinds of decadent foods for my family!!! So weird. It’s like I get joy from them being able to have things I can’t. Some recipes have been healthy but lots of delicious things that I won’t tempt any of you with. I’m really looking forward to six months out. Seems like everyone is mostly happy by that point. Keep moving forward!! You’re doing great.
@tiab thank you.

I went to two county fairs and I brought my own food. Went so my Grandson and other family members could enjoy it. I did take a bite of a hand rolled pretzel otherwise I stuck to the food choices I brought with me.
@Danny Paul wow very impressive!! Great job!!

I completely understand how you feel. I was lucky in that my surgeon's office forced you to adapt to the post surgery lifestyle prior to surgery. So many of my favorite foods and large portions were already gone. With that said, there has been plenty of stuff I have craved and missed. But it really does get easier. I'm three months out this coming Thursday and you do have to accept that you should never eat some of the foods you ate before. (Well at least not the volumes and not all in the same day.) Try to focus on the fact that in time you can have 2-3 bites of a favorite food you miss and you will really enjoy it. I've totally done that. Now it's just the exception and takes planning and a lot of mindfulness. I can tell you that nothing I miss food-wise compares to how great I feel with 73 lbs. gone. You can do this!! Just focus on the end game--reaching your goal and getting healthy. The only way to get there is to fill your body with healthy food and follow your food plan from your surgeon. Best wishes! [emoji4]
@pleasedontjudgeme thank you. And congratulations on the 73 lbs! Great job!

Blood clots are not fun. I hope you feel better soon. I had blood clots years ago (long before surgery) in my lungs.

My surgery was 08/17, I miss eating so much, sometimes I tell myself what have I done, I was happy before, I feel like I'll never be able to eat again. my main problem is water/liquid intake, sometimes I go a whole day without drinking Water, I've always hated water, only thing I can consume without any issues is milk with a couple of scoops of Cereal.

I can’t go out to eat or anything like a fair. I would be miserable. The worst thing for me is at work. It seems like food is all people talk about all day.

I've gone out to eat and learned quickly to share an order.

As for work, I'm not missing anything. Today someone brought in fresh Panera Bagels (used to be a weakness of mine) and today I saw them (looked great) but the smell of them made me want to get sick. Post surgery I am noticing a lot of foods I previously loved, I can no longer tolerate the smell of.

I really thought I'd be "suffering" more, but as each week progresses, I find it easier and I don't miss those things that were once bad for me. But in my defense as well, I've lived a very low carb lifestyle for the last 9 months so that too has helped in my WLS recovery.

Yesterday I went to the dentist and she commented on how well my teeth looked compared to 6 months ago - I attribute it to living a healthy lifestyle. Less crap buildup on your teeth. The benefits to healthy eating out number the benefits to my lifestyle a year ago.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
