October 2018 Sleevers

Recommended Posts

Just Protein Shakes, for more than a week, seems cruel. broth is a nice change from sweetness, and you do get some Protein from that... but it's not exactly a meal substitute. And it's such a weird rule, when appropriate Soups are available. I guess people aren't awesome at following directions, though, so the worry is that people will sub in Campbell's when they should be having one of those high-protein diet soups.

Anyway, that stinks, and I'm sorry.

I just got my date! 10/15/18.

I've gone off the pill, I didn't drink soda before, quit drinking alcohol, and am ALMOST off coffee. I'm very excited. I just ordered some Premier Protein drinks and a glass with the ounces marked so I can measure out 2 oz. I also bought sweatpants with a loose waist for the hospital.

At my hospital they give you a dilaudid self push hand thing and a small script of dilaudid to take home, so I'm not worried about pain.

I have an office job and they are completely cool with me working from home 2-3 weeks if I feel like I want/need to. That was a huge relief.

I'm super excited about my surgery and meeting my fellow Oct. sleevers.

Yare_2918 I pray everything goes smooth for you and I hope to be able to stay in touch through this Journey. How have you done on the pre-op diet. I actually found it to be easy. :)

Same to you @bmatt418 and yes we can stay in touch. My surgery is scheduled to be at 8am I live in Tampa Florida.

I'm not doing pre-op diet and I feel bad mentioning this since all of you guys are going through that process right now. I'm just eating healthy and tomorrow at night I have to use 2 fleets before bed time and another medicine the doctor ordered, also I have to drink 32oz of G2 4 hours before surgery and not eat anything after midnight. Those are my instructions pre-op.

I'm on day 4 of liquids and have lost 6ish pounds. (I mean, on top of the three months of dieting.) If I can keep losing at this rate, I'll have hit my surgeon's "10% of starting body weight lost before surgery" goal before my surgery next Wednesday.

I got him to let me slide in at the beginning of flu season, whether I hit the goal or not, because I work in public service and get bronchitis every winter. Bronchitis would push my surgery back to ... like, April, maybe, by the time I got better and they got me back on the schedule.

But hitting the goal would still feel good.

Oh hey, just in case anyone else is feeling the chill in the air (northern hemisphere :)) and wanting some hot chocolate, you can do it with chocolate Protein powder: https://www.foodcoach.me/recipe/protein-hot-chocolate/

I used Fairlife milk instead of almond milk. (Nut allergy. Also almond milk has crappy environmental and protein profiles, so I probably wouldn't use it even if I could.) I also threw in some cinnamon and (shh, I don't know if this is 100% OK on the pre-op liquid diet) a splash of vanilla extract.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
