Hi all. Six weeks post op from the sleeve and feeling. Depressed today. Was supposed to have dinner with family last night but it’s tonight. Italian restaurant. I’m still adjusting to this new way of life-not being able to eat whatever I want. I know where it got me-it’s just such a big adjustment. I feel sad and almost in mourning today. For my old life. Trying to shake it. Anyone else been there done that?

This is only a phase. Soon enough you'll be able to eat out. Just with some minor adjustments. You'll back to feeling normal in no time. I 100% fully understand what you are feeling, I had plenty of the same thoughts and emotions thinking about how I'll never be able to do this or that. But you know what. It all worked out just fine. For the items I really can't keep eating because of the bypass, I've found alternatives that satiate those feelings. And some things I thought I never could have again... I have no issues with. I just don't consume them nearly as much as I have before.

Just remember all the reasons you wanted the surgery, remember that those "normal" things you used to love to do / eat... might not have been healthy at all. Change sucks. But oh boy is this change worth it! Stay strong, this too will pass.

Yes totally been there...

But what makes you think you can't have what you want?

Everyone is eating bread sticks, use that time to hydrate a bit then start your 30 min countdown to food

You what chicken parm? Order it with modifications (unbreaded light sauce ricotta cheese shaved parm cheese vegetables on the side)

What lasagna? Order it made with just layers of meat, ricotta, spinach.

Seafood. Perfect. Hold the Pasta add the vegetables.

Desert? you'll be too full anyways, but if not don't order your own , slightly taste someone else's (only if its not a trigger)

Special occasions, not everyday binges. Log everything stay accountable. Stay on track.

Challenge the chef to do his/her best gluten free work. Tell him/her your story

This is your life now fight for it

Thanks! You give me hope! You’re right. I can have foods with modifications. Just have to be creative. Haven’t had any type of Pasta since surgery. Might try some tonight. Small portion.

Make sure its on plan for you first (the worry is the formation of a dough ball obstruction when bread and Pasta is introduced too early/slowed weightloss from high carbs)

if not, no big deal check if they have alternatives like spiralized vegetables etc.

Stay close to plan above all for optimal success

And remember youre really there to hang out with your family

But you totally got this!!!

Enjoy tonight !!! you have an entire life of incredible moments coming up

There is so much healthy and delicious food that you can order at an Italian restaurant! Seafood is easy, shellfish (shrimp and clams come to mind), broccoli rabe and spinach sides, meatballs even! Ask for them just to bring a half-serving and package the rest to take home if you’re anxious about seeming like you’re not eating a full serving, or just order off the appetizers. And soup! Don’t forget soup! So many great and healthy food choices. Go, enjoy both the food and your family, and be proud of yourself!

Thank you for the reply. I just have been so down. Need to focus more on my cup being half full. There are food I can eat. I just have to be creative. I’ll post after dinner to let you all know how I made out! Thanks again!

I don't do Pasta anymore, and really have just moved past it, the sauce is so good just with a meatball, or a shrimp dish, scallops, veal or chicken dish with a veg. Eat really slowly....enjoy the company. Become gourmet, only eat the best because it's only a few bites, take the rest home - anyone can have bread - but mmm veal scaloppini...

Thanks for your reply. I wound up getting salmon with veges. I did well. Didn’t eat much at all-but what I did eat was great! I watched the family eat all the appetizers and I was good. Fried calamari-I used to finish off a whole plate! So it was manageable and doable. Feeling better about conquering these challenges. Thanks for all the replies!

Salmon with vegetables does sound good. Glad you stayed strong with all that luscious Italian cooking there. See it isn't always about the food, the family companionship is more important for us. I'm so very proud of YOU!👉😛👈

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
