Hello there friends.

Just finished first month of supervised weight management. I know I have LOADS to work on for the next 6 months until I can fully qualify for surgery. I am looking for a fellow pre op person who is starting this journey or actually anyone who has been down the road also. I need someone to help keep me accountable. I have been doing the food diary thing now for 2 weeks (didn't know until this past Thursday when I attended seminar that it was a thing.) and have been trying to get some ducks in order so I can continue.

Things I am struggling with currently:

Portion Control. Holy cow that's huge. Never had to pre measure things out ever in my life. Need to do it and keep doing this.

Calories per day: I never really ever took into account how many calories I take in. I know that I have measured carbs in the past and will continue to do that now.

Choices of foods: Its far easier for me to buy a cheap pack of bologna than it is to find something else and actually prepare food. But also I love bologna. Like I can put away a bologna sandwich and not think about it.

Some changes I have started implementing:

I have made contact with bariatric dietitian tonight. I sent email and will follow up with more contact if no reply this next week.

I have started going back through diaries and marking caloric content of foods and totaling up daily estimated calories in

If this is something you think you could or would want to do: let me know! I want to ensure the success for this journey.

Good for you! Good luck with everything.

Have you tried My Fitness Pal? It's free online and the app is free on your cell phone. You can use the camera on your phone to scan the bar code and it will enter the food/nutrition information for you. You would have to adjust the portions to what you're actually eating, but this is definitely easier and less frustrating than a hand written food journal.

I am not accountable with electronic journal. I forget to do them for days. Handwritten is best for me.

Still looking for someone to help keep me going.

yes. Indeed I am looking for someone still. Since my original post, I have visited my doctor for month 2 of 7 required before I can submit for authorization with my insurance. My doctor has advised me to try a Keto based diet. Ordinarily this would be awesome for me. but for whatever reason I can't seem to stop craving the things I can't have: fruit, juice, sweets, Snacks, breads. :( But I keep trying. Had a first cheat day this past day. had some Pasta and pie. but I monitored my portions so that made me feel better. Back to the diet now.

I have been regularly getting my 7k steps in. Most days I have closer to 10k steps. So I been doing decent enough on my activity aspect of all this. I just need to nail down this nutrition side. lol. I don't know what we can and can't share on this site as far as personal info goes, or how that works. do you?

That’s the key. Getting back on track. I myself struggle. As for personal info I’m not sure. I’m still new to this site and to the process. It’s been so much information at once so I’m still trying to put the pieces together. I’ll inbox you if you wanna chat more.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but in my humble opinion, if you are eating such that you need a diary or an app like myfitnesspal to calculate your daily calories/fat/carbs, you are eating too much.

During the pre-op diet phase, I kept it simple - dinner would be lean Protein and vegetables. Breakfast and lunch usually Protein Shakes. That's it. Every day. No need to count calories or use an app. Does it suck? Sort of, but it's only 6 months and keep your eye on the prize. I'm down 50 pounds since January. 41 pounds down prior to the liquid pre-op diet.

Actually, compared to the 2-week liquid pre-op diet I'm on now (surgery the 13th!) I'd give anything to have that lean chicken or fish and brussel sprouts right now.

I’m post op and I use an app to make sure I’m getting enough Protein, which was suggested by my nutritionist

I have to keep a very in depth detailed journal of foods and exercises. The surgeons office I chose makes all participants in my category do this. I count calories, carbs, and Protein. In addition I count my daily steps and track daily exercises. I don't do it because I want to. I find the journal kind of cumbersome. But my insurance requires it, so my doc requires it.

I find that MFP or similar apps keep me on track, I don't and haven't over eaten since I started using the app. My nutritionist requires me to log my meals and honestly I prefer to.

I was doing Keto prior to pre op and the app helped me discover what foods my body couldn't tolerate and what foods made me balloon up.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
