Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion

Recommended Posts

I’ll throw in my two cents. I’m a summer surgery (July 25). I’ve had ups and downs along the way. Promotion at work (yay) but the dark shadow of depression lurks around every corner (been on medication from 2010-2017, until I found out gym worked better, and is way cheaper!).

Since surgery, I am happy to announce that I’m 57 lbs lighter physically, and add a hundred emotionally (on good days).

Being post op, even with all the weight loss, takes a toll on one’s mental health. With all my research pre-op, I didn’t realize this. Is it just me, or did anyone else struggle emotionally?
My surgery was 8/15. Yes the emotional struggle is real for me too. Cried tonight in fact.

So here’s what all is going on in my life:

My weight loss has stalled again. Well actually I think I’m breaking that stall finally. I finally lost a pound after 3 weeks of no weight loss.

My boss offered me a position in his store he’s building as an assistant manager. But the pay and benefits are GM level pay. (Yay!! 48k a year!!) and bonus it means we get to move back to Colorado which I’ve wanted.

I can’t work out because I don’t have a place to work out, and I can’t afford the gym. Ugh.

So that’s my life at the moment.

So happy for you, Megan. As for working out, I’ll recommend my two top apps for home work outs: Kayla Itsines’s “Sweat” (membership required) or Emily Skye’s “FIT” (free, last I checked). Whichever you choose, they WILL work. It’s a matter of preference. Good luck!

325.2 as of this morning, a little bit of a stall bot not the end of the world. If I could get my 💩to be consistent it would help. I drink 16 oz of Miralax every night in the hopes of a regular trip to the bathroom in the morning. For a while there it was working and now it is hit and miss. Sometimes I can still go 2 or 3 day without a regular visit.

I still lurk around but haven’t been posting. I will be 6 months out December 28th. I think I’m doing okay. My body keeps stalling after slight gains. Had a 3 week stall and then it broke. Gained again but lost the weight I gained. My body is just being really weird right now. I’m down to about 225-226 lbs right now (was 275 day of surgery and 285 day of discharge). My surgeon’s office wants me to be at least 220 by January, hoping to surpass that. Hope all is well with everyone!

I’ve been taking triplex from plexus and haven’t had a single issue with poop since. Pm me and I’ll give you a website. The stuff is awesome. It supports gut health :)

On the app there is an inbox button but on the site I think you can go to the person’s profile to PM them

I’m glad you relate, but I’m so sorry you’re struggling too. We keep thinking this surgery will make our lives better, and I believe it has, for the most part, but I think my inner fat girl is going through shock.

I'm still here too :) I had surgery on July 3rd. High weight in April was 362, and my current weight is 256!! Kind of hit a little stall at around 265 for a couple weeks, but then things started moving again. Hoping that the holidays don't tempt me too much!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
