Hair Loss

Recommended Posts

So, my Hair loss continues, sigh ....

I put my hair up this morning, and I would estimate I've lost about 1/3 of my volume. The thinness is really noticeable around my hairline when it's up. I don't think it's too noticeable when it's down and freshly washed. I'm going to see my mom this afternoon, so I'll be able to get an honest opinion.

I tried the scarf head band type things, didn't like them. I think they use models with tiny heads. On me they were narrow and didn't cover much of my head. I bought some of the chemo scarf type head covers (that's actually what they are called on Amazon). But those didn't flatter my face. So I got nothing there, besides a baseball cap I guess

I've ordered Rogaine, I'll start that tonight. I should have started it at my first sign of loss, because it says it takes 3-6 months to work .... ugh. I'll probably do a weave too, if this continues. But that won't help my hairline obviously.

Crap, I was hoping your loss had slowed. I was just coming by to say that the Hair loss has begun in earnest since I last posted - fair amounts of visible shedding at all times of day. Not noticing it yet in the mirror, except that my hair is flatter overall, but it's only really been a week. At the rate it's going this might get alarming, and I REALLY do not want it to grow back in all crunchy like after my surgery three years ago. I've been wearing white shirts to work and I initially thought I was just overreacting to normal shedding, but this morning I looked at my white pillowcase and YIKES.

I do not have a tiny head, so maybe I'll have to give the headbands a miss too. I am working in a more casual office for a few months so can likely get away with headgear creativity... Crap! This sucks! If this keeps going, the likelihood is that I'll chop it all off and go with a layered messy bob until regrowth starts. Not my favorite hairstyle, but acceptable.

Anyhow, I guess this disproves my theory that prolonged low calorie intake for the pre-op/post-op is the main culprit in hair loss.

@sideeye Sorry to hear that, at least we have good company to commiserate with. I'm a little glad to know it's not the low calories. I just came out of a stall, so really don't want to up my cals. Have you done short hair before. I love the sound of a "messy layered bob", but I'm afraid it will be unflattering, and then I'm stuck with it.

For some good news. my mom confirmed that my Hair loss isn't obvious at all when my hair is down and freshly washed.

I have done short hair before. It freaks you out for the first couple of days and then you get used to it and the shop cut washes out a bit and you figure out how to style it and you’re good. Right now my hair is mid-back and that’s around the time I start worrying I look like a sister-wife, so I’m going to have to do something regardless, either shoulder length or all the way up to my chin.

Glad to hear it’s not noticeable when washed and loose!

You are not alone. I’m almost 2 months out and my hair has been coming out like crazy, the back and center of my head being the thinnest. I couldn’t stand how shabby and horrible it looked. I’ve never had super short hair but at the suggestion of my beautician I cut it all off... 12 inches, she gave me a super short pixie cut. I cried while she cut but I have to admit it looks so much better than my ratty hair looked before. It’s been a few days now and I’m actually liking it and trying to have fun with it. I’m glad I did it. When I was at my highest weight I hid behind my hair, so it’s been a kind of freeing experience if that makes sense.

It’s one of those things that happens to most people. My hair was so thin and I hated it. I was so excited when it started growing back. Yep, you will have weird wisps and it will look like you’re growing bangs, but keep working with your stylist. It comes back!
I had the sleeve in 2014, and the Hair loss was bad, as I was quite sick. I just converted to bypass on 6/26, and I am just mentally preparing myself to deal with it again!
We are all in this together, baby fine hair and all lol!

five years post sleeve. I started losing my short thin hair at 5 months. It lasted two years before some regrowth. I was forced to buy a wig, lifesaver two years. I did everything right with Biotin, Vitamins, Protein, quit coloring my hair, used the Fiber crappy thing to sprinkle in your hair. Lost hair at my temple which never came back. My hair is manageable the past two years, but still fragile. I lost 18 lbs. in the at 6 months. My hair is now coming out like crazy again. I don’t care what you do, it is the luck of the draw. You might never have this problem and wave it off, but some of us will always have a hair problem. I wear a visor a lot, and have my wigs handy.

Aaaaaand it's now noticeable. Have been pulling out hair in fistfuls, but today is the first time I've truly noticed that my hairline's gone thin at the temples after washing and drying my hair (when it's in peak form). Yikes.

I did start out with a considerable amount of hair, so I've got quite a lot left, but yeah - I'm going to get it cut to chin-length. It's long right now and the combination of the length's weight and how it's falling naturally... Nope. Chop chop chop.

Sorry to hear it's still happening. Mines still coming out too. Very depressing xx

Ugh! Sorry to hear that!

I'm don't do a lot of self pity, but I actually cried in the shower a couple of weeks ago over this.

I'm tempted to do the short and choppy thing, but I'm scared. I'm going to be w a coworker next week who has her cosmetology degree, (and is younger and hipper than I am!) and get her ideas on going short.

I'm cutting mine this weekend, I think. My hair is down to the middle of my back, I think i'll start off by going to my shoulders. Hopefully thicken it up.

Anyone trying Jamaican black Castor oil on their temple area for added protection of follicles , hot oil treatments, co washing only, washing and manipulating less? These are things done within the AA community to mitigate the effects of traction alopecia

The issue with WLS Hair loss isn't traction alopecia, it's telogen effluvium, the issue is caused by an internal stress triggering more follicles to go dormant at the same time than would normally happen, it's not *actual* hair loss, just, an issue where the normal shed cycle gets changed due to the stress of the surgery/fever/diet etc.

I'm aware, I've posted rigorously about it. But those were my question in reference to rountines

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
