Sleeve or bypass, how did you choose?

Recommended Posts

The surgeon laid out the options and thought that the GSL was a better option for my situation. He said since I don't have a bmi over 40 nor diabetes that the bypass was not my best option.

Not 100% sure which one I should get? How did you decide?

My dr decided that I would be better candidate for the RNY (I chose sleeve) he said because of my history of acid reflux and my sweet tooth the RNY would better since acid reflux would be better and I would be less tempted to eat sweets if I had the RNY.

I have the same issue with sweet cravings and acid reflux. My doctor recommends the bypass. Is bypass called "RNY"? Still learning the lingo. Lol

I chose bypass bc I felt that it maximizes the weight loss . I also feel like the bypass limits your eating more- And There are so many people getting their sleeves converted to bypass and I didn’t want two surgeries ! If you have reflux the bypass eliminates (or at least reduces) it —- and folks say the sleeve can create reflux .

I decided on a bypass before I even saw the surgeon because I didn't think a sleeve would work for me,I didn't think it would restrict my eating like a bypass, my surgeon said a sleeve but I said a bypass and he was fine with that.

Oh ok. Are you happy with your decision on the bypass?

Learned something new. I didn't know the sleeve can creat reflux nor the bypass could reduce or eliminate it. I feel the same way about the bypass I want to maximize my weight loss.

I was a "low BMI" patient, so I wasn't thinking seriously about the RNY, but I would have listened to my surgeon if they suggested it. However, my surgeon said I was "the perfect candidate" for the sleeve, which was what I wanted anyways. I didn't want more health problems down the line via nutritional deficiencies or what have you if I happened to lose too much weight. And I really didn't want to re-wire all of my guts--for me, taking some of one thing out is better than redoing all the pipes :P

I am very happy with my decision. Almost 5 months post op and only 28lbs until I reach my goal. And maybe I'll keep going!

I originally wanted to go with the sleeve but after talking with my surgeon I chose bypass. My surgeon explained to me that I wouldn’t lose all the weight I want with the sleeve and because I already have really bad acid reflux that the sleeve could make it worse. He asked me if I wanted to take medication for acid reflux for the rest of my life and i told him my one of my goals with surgery was to stop taking medications for high blood pressure and that would just have me trading one med for another. So it’ll be bypass surgery in June.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
