I am aware post surgery we are to drink at least 64 oz of Water per day.

is this requirement forever or just in the first 12 months after surgery?

i am asking because I have such a difficult time getting in required liquid.

I believe this is a lifetime requirement. WLS or not, the recommended amount of Water per day is 8-8 ounce glasses per day. It’s even more important for people who have had recent surgery. liquids are important for healing, nutrition absorption, and for weight loss.

Ash Ash I came up with a new motto
When your body is full of Fluid and moist
All your bodily cells will rejoice.
Ok not the best poem in the world but I do work cheap![emoji13]

Yes! I will recite it from now on! Bahahahaha!

As AshAsh said 64 oz is really just the formula for not getting dehydrated surgery or no and the 64 oz don't technically have to be Water, you get to count anything that is primarily liquid (protein shakes, Soup, Jello, ice pops, etc). That said I I think that as you heal you will find it easier to get the liquid in, its a requirement at the begining because everyone post op has initial difficulty getting it in without working at it.

I say Water, I wasn’t being 100% literal. Fluids in general. All the options you mentions are great.

Bariatrics is a lifelong change. Water/fluid intake gets easier and becomes habit. The way you eat, drink and exercise becomes normal over time. Hang in there.:)

Sorry, that part was in reaction to the OP's comment about Water. I wasn't trying to correct what you said.

I used to drink upwards of 64 oz a day before surgery, now I can barely get 32 oz in at 3.5 months post op. Also, I cannot do plain Water as it sits very heavy on my stomach so I drink Decaf tea, infused water.

@aNYCdb........so impressed with your weight loss!!! you got sleeved approximately 1 week prior to me. I am curious...how have you lost that much?? I know everyone is different and everyone will lose at their own rate....but holy guacamole girl!! you are tearing it up!! Well done!! :) Have you done anything different? Is there an ancient Chinese secret that I am unaware of? lol

Just to be clear the starting weight was when I started the process (7 months ago) and I tried to lose as much as I could during that process. When I had my surgery three weeks ago I was 232, so "only" down about 20 pounds in three weeks. I don't think I did anything monumental for the first two weeks, I was just very fortunate to have had very little pain after the first 2 days. By around day 5 I was feeling pretty much at 100%. I got permission to go back to the gym (cardio only) last week I've been really trying to crush it to help the weight loss from that end.

Lifetime requirement. In fact I often do 90oz.

The list Water provides us as human beings, especially on our weight-loss journey, is endless and indispensable.

Like you I have issues with it. While there is no taste, it can make me gag. I do it anyway. I cannot drink anything remotely sweet, even with artificial sweetener after being sleeved because my buds changed.

But if you can stand it, try crystal light, or an unsweetened flavored drink without caffeine that you can sweeten yourself using stevia or another artificial sweetener. I used to do 35 Oz Water, scoop of Protein and one packet of crystal light.

It helped.

Also you can also do ice pops. Or any other water based and unsweetened fluids.

Personally I prefer only water due to the fact my skin is better, I age slower (46 going on 32) and it keeps food digested and bowels regular. I also like that I know water is natural as I hate pills and the hidden additives and preservatives in most juices and drinks that claim to be water.

Best of luck!

It’s a myth that you have to drink 8 glasses of Water a day. No science behinds this or needing 64 oz of Water per day. Of course water requirements vary per person, so you have to find what’s right for you. If your pee is pale yellow in the toilet, you are hydrated.

Oh, and coffee does not cause you to lose additional fluids or dehydrate you.

I think 64 oz thing is hogwash. Early on when you're in the liquid/puree phase I think 64 oz is a good number for most people to aim for. But once I started eating solid foods and a relatively normal diet again (around 2-3 months post op) my Fluid intake is close to half that possibly even slightly less.

And I pee non stop and it's always clear, so I'm not particularly concerned about my fluid intake. If I was drinking 64oz + of fluid a day I would probably be peeing in excess of 20 times a day which is in no way appropriate or healthy

Me too! I rely on hot decaf tea for my main source of fluid

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
