How much weight does one generally lose with gastric sleeve surgery?

Recommended Posts

So I’m one day post op. My preop weight was 289. Just wondering how much weight can I lose. My surgeon wants me to get down to 170-180. Is this possible.Anyone had this procedure long ago or lost lots of weight. What did you do to shed the pounds?

It’s possible. I’m down 80 pounds and I had the same preop weight. And I’m jut shy of 4 months out but if you get surgery please make sure you don’t have sick people around you. I ended up having issues because of getting the flu. You can message me if you want to talk ever as well!

At my heaviest, I was probably over 300, but wouldn't get on a scale. By the time I went to the surgeon I was 271.5, but had lost about 15 pounds. I'm now 162. So I'm down about 110, and my body fat percentage is around 30% right now. Looking to get the fat down to around 26 and working with my trainer on that. I'm 5'3" and had my surgery at 55. I now fit into clothes that my two teen daughters no longer fit into. Went from a size 24 to a size 8.

Great. What types of foods do you eat and what is your exercise routine like?

7 months out and you can see the stats on the left.

i eat Protein , fats, carbs and sugar in that order 50 grams on carbs per day under 10 on sugar

i eat only 4-6 ounces per meal and only between noon and 8pm. this is for blood sugar control.

i work out 5 days a week 30 minutes on weights 40 minutes on treadmill.

i admit to being a little extreme. but since i see this as a new lease on life i am getting all i can out of that first year when it is the easiest to lose the weight.

cant speak to the long term but from other posts it gets harder a few years out so i want to strike while the Iron is hot.

With the gastric sleeve, you can expect to lose 75% of your excess body weight. Your profile says you are 5'7", so your ideal weight is 115-155. You have an excess of 289-155, so about 134. So 75% of that is about 100 lbs, which means you could expect to get down to at least 180! That's totally possible :)

There's other way to calculate ideal body weight, too... here's one from Moose and Doc: http://halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm

I eat anywhere from 60-100 grams of Protein a day. I do not eat added sugars. I eat very few things that have more than 10 grams of sugar in a serving unless it is fresh fruit. I fence (as in en garde) 5 hours a week. I spent another 2 - 3 hours doing strength training, agility and yoga or pilates. I drink at least 64 ounces of Water a day - probably double that on days I fence. Today, I did an hour of Pilates and 45 minutes of lower body/legs weights including squats with about 70 pounds on the bar. I can deadlift more than I weigh by about 20 or 25 pounds. Tomorrow, I will do an hour of core and upper body work. Sunday, I will fence a tournament for 3-4 hours. In 2 hours of fencing, I burn about 1000 calories. I don't eat what I burn. I work hard, but it has all been worth it. I'm trying to get my body fat down to about 26% - hoping to get close to that by the fall.

I eat lots of cottage cheese, yogurt, almonds, and do Protein Shakes. I haven’t exercised except running around like a madman at work 😂

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
