How to tell family I want to get a sleeve

Recommended Posts

I'm 23 yrs old My bmi is 33 and My weight fluctuates between 215 and 225. I love food and I know I need to get healthy and Ive changed my eating habits a lot in the past year but even still I haven't been able to lose the weight. My schedule is very busy with two kids and school so I can't commit to the gym but I'm very active running after a toddler all the time. I want to talk to my family about wanting to get a sleeve but I think they won't support it. I am an emotional eater and I can't always tell when I'm full so I think that this would be beneficial for me. Plus I'm at risk for type two diabetes. How did you make it known that this is something you wanted as a aid and not just an easy way out? I need help and this is my last resort I want to be happy in my skin.

Talk to your primary doctor to make sure you qualify first. What type of insurance do you have?

I have personal choice as my primary and Aetna better health as my secondary. I haven't brought it up to anyone yet. This is the first time Ive verbalized my want to get wls so I'm pretty unsure of how to address it with anyone including my dr.

Don't be afraid, I waited and waited for years. Years that I regret. Think of the freedom and healthier life you will have. I would not mention it to my family yet. Talk to your doctor first. Once it becomes a possibility then talk to your support group, this might be family or friends.

I don't want to regret not getting it because of other people opinions but I am scared. I just want to be health for myself and my kids as well as feel good about my appearance. I'm going to call my dr tomorrow to set up an appointment. Thank you.

First do your research on bariatrics. I went to an educational seminar put on by my local hospital. It's hard to explain to your family if you don't understand the medical procedures and process. You also need to know If you are a good candidate and if your insurance will cover surgery.

You don't need other people to validate your decision. Keep the supportive people around you. Don't bang your head against the wall trying to convince negative people of your choices in life.

Best of luck to you,

Jenn

In my personal experience, I did get a little bit of pushback from my family and friends.. they all said "you don't need surgery" or "I'm sure you could do it on your own" initially. I made it a point to let them know that I was doing this for myself, and just sharing these big and life-changing news with them because I could appreciate their support—rather than asking them for their permission or opinions. Once I told them a little bit more about my situation and how much I had investigated on WLS, everybody became super supportive and understanding. It is scary, but hopefully the outcome and the support you'll receive in return will be completely worth it. Also, YouTube videos/IG acts of people who have been through this helps. Best of luck!!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
