Best ways to get past a stall?

Recommended Posts

I am nearly 3 months post gastric sleeve, and have lost 48 pounds. But for 2 weeks, my weight hasn't budged! I am getting my Protein daily, and exercising most days, with some resistance training thrown in. I eat around 1000 calories per day. What should I do?

Are you meeting your Protein and Water goals? For me, I don't think I was at 1,000 calories until I was about 8 months out. I'm still at around 1,000 calories - 1,200 on days that I fence which burns about 1,000 calories. I make sure I don't eat the calories I burn.

Try shifting your diet around to bump up your protein and drink more water. I wouldn't add calories.

At 3 months, you should still be weighing and measuring and logging every bite you eat. (I log everything at 13 months, weigh or measure when I'm home.)

I wouldn't worry too much with a 2 week stall, but...

When I asked my NUT this question she suggested the first thing I should check is Water and Protein intake and then take a look at the quality of food. Are you eating food that is minimally processed? Are you getting the most nutrition for your calories?

You have lost a great deal, your body may need a minute to catch up. Have you tried a few days rest from exersise and see if that helps.

2 words - Water and shock! It's a great way to kick-start your body during a stall.

First thing, eat. Don't diet. Gain a pound. Eat things you don't normally eat. Don't be afraid to eat something off your diet plan. Don't follow your plan. Skip the Protein for a day. Don't drink as much Fluid. Gain a water pound. Your body stalls because it gets into a pattern. Get it out of the pattern. Shock your body.

Then, go back on your meal plan and drink water. More than usual. Water only, lay off other fluids and any artificial sweeteners. Do that for two days. Your body will not only lose the water weight gain but be shocked back into the normal weight loss pattern.

Great advice from my nutritionist but it worked like a charm. It's a marathon, not a sprint, and your body can't be constantly in a weight loss mode if it becomes too complacent. It needs some change from time to time.

Good luck! And don't worry about stalls. They are natural. Everyone here has experienced them, myself included and the advice I got from these good people really helped. I wish you all the best! You're doing great!

Thank you for the words of support! That is what I was hoping for with this site (not finger pointing like I have experienced sometimes)

Balls! Yeah, there's a bad apple in every bunch. But, generally, the people on this site are just nothing short of freaking amazing. They have been a true calming and guiding force for me through this journey.

Most of us will be here for ya!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
