I'm 7 weeks post op have lost about 35 pounds one of my surgeons said to count carbs and the other said don't that on my having 5-7 bites per meal it's not a big deal I do low carb but was just curious if any other surgeons have said not to count carbs

5-7 bites of even seemingly Healthy food can relate into a ton of Carbs. Condiments are another area that you really have to watch as well. My Best Friend is the Nutrition Label and so many times people neglect multiplying by the true serving size. I would in the past ridicule the Low Carb Keto lifestyle but the last 9 months and 200 pound loss has shown me that for me it works.

some surgeons push low-carb plans, others don't. And some people whose surgeons *aren't* into carb limitations follow low-carb anyway, because they say it works better for them. My surgeon's office doesn't really push low-carb, although I followed a moderately low-carb plan - not ultra low-carb (I limited my carbs to 80 grams when I was in the losing phase). But then, I'm not particularly carb sensitive, so it worked for me. It might not for others. Some people say they do best when they limit carbs to like 30 or 40.

Ok, so all those calculators on the internet suck!!! I've been saying I eat 1200 calories, but in formulating an answer to this post, I found out it's closer to 1000! Sheesh.

Ok..so my original post... :

Carbs are "fillers", calorie-wise.

First, figure out your calorie goal. I like mine at 1200, for example.

Then protein: mine is 70g. (280 cals).

Then fat: Around 40g. (360 cals).

280+360= 640cals. 1200-640= 560 / 4= 140g carbs...

But I know I don't eat that many carbs! So I went through and retotalled them by hand.

My new totals..

78g net carbohydrate (312 calories)

74g Protein (296 calories)

45g fat (405 calories)

Total: 1013 calories

All those people on the super low carb, Keto diets.. if they eat 150g protein and 20g carbs, that's only 680 calories. If they aren't trying to lose weight, they need to eat the equivalent of 10-15 tablespoons of fat.

I do not follow super low carb and my NUT advises against it in the long term. I'm averaging about 90-110 grams of carbs a day currently and am still in the losing phase though I'm nearing my goal weight (15 pounds until goal). Per my NUT complex carbs are good for the body and we need them. I'm not personally carb sensitive though so if you are or you find carbs to be an issues that leads to cravings I would eat less.

Not all carbs are created equal - most vegetable carbs do not affect me, but don't throw grain carbs in the mix very often.......

Question: Did most of your plans follow very low fat? And did those veterans that have been successful follow that during the early weight loss phase (or not) and did you change that gradually, later on or not at all?

carbs are a diet killer for 80% of us. If you are lucky enough to no be negatively effected by carbs than great!!! But most of us need to avoid them. My doctor literally yelled out to me as I was leaving his office in my first post surgery appointment "And stay away from carbs!!! They'll ruin everything!" lol!

I never counted fat grams at all. During the weight loss phase, I counted Protein and, after the first 3 or 4 months (when I could eat more), I started watching overall calories. I do intentionally eat some fat now (like full-fat yogurts, avocado, etc) because it keeps me full. But again, I watch my calories.

I make sure to follow what my nutritionist told me to do

Low to no fat, low to no sugar, low carbs and 1000-1200 calories but im only going to be 6 weeks post op on the 20th so im only getting 500-800 calories which is fine with me i had to increase my carbs a bit because i was getting dizzy, im down 22lbs so far.

I've very early in the process, so I'm not getting a lot of carbs (today's my first day of pureed food). But I'm planning to avoid them as much as possible in the future--I know I'm sensitive to them--in my former life, a few carbs made me want more carbs, and so on . . . and I'm a diabetic, so double trouble there. My new life is low-carb and will stay that way if I can possibly keep it that way.

I don't so much count them now as use MyFitnessPal to track everything I consume, but mainly so I can track my Protein and Water goals. Eventually I'll be watching calories and the carb count will be right there in front of me.

My plan is low carb (not ultra low) and I don't worry about fat. Most of the carbs in my diet during the losing phase were from dairy and vegetables. Fat was mostly from dairy and nuts and nut butter. Now that I'm at goal I have more fruit and legumes for my carbs. And occasionally a cookieN

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

      Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

        I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.
