Are protein shakes a meal or a drink?

Hey so I'm three weeks post op and haven't really used shakes (my nurse didn't really encourage them) but now I have to use them to get enough protein in anyway you know you have to stop drinking 30 minutes before a meal? Do you have to do that with protein shakes? Or do they count as a drink? Thanks! ?

I count them as a meal, so I try not to drink any water 15 minutes before a shake and at least 30-45 minutes after finishing one.

My nutritionist also counts them as a meal and we had to follow the "no water 30 min before/after" rule. Since they were a meal we weren't supposed to drink a whole shake in a sitting but split it up 2oz every 2 hours and drink water in between. Your nutritionist may have a different way of doing things. Hope that helps!

I didn't count them as meal that early out. It is too hard to get your fluids in and they are just a liquid. It isn't like they sit on your stomach anyway. Never followed the 30 minutes before and after with them, and was never told to. They are liquids, not meals for my program.
