weight gain during 6 month weigh-in period

Recommended Posts

I have gained about ten pounds since the start of all the weigh-ins. I just started nursing school and i have been stress eating like crazy! Im at my halfway mark now so I really need to get on it and start eating better. Has/did anyone have this problem during their weigh-ins and does anyone know if the weight gain will effect my chances of being approved for surgery?

My surgeon was pi$$ed at me. I don't blame him. I also started school and was also going though custody issues with the ex. Needless to say, I was stress eating. I also quit smoking at that time. My surgeon told me to lose well over 10 pounds before my endoscope. I was already approved by insurance and had a surgical date. My endoscope was two weeks away from the that time of meeting with my surgeon. Endoscope was on Friday and surgery was schedule for the Monday following. I lost 13 pounds before endoscope.

You should read up on your insurances policies. My insurance didnt allow a net gain from start to finish of the supervised diet. You had to weigh less or the same come the end-not even a pound heavier or insurance would not approve. Not sure if your self pay then i guess it would be up to your doctor and their rules.

See I haven't even met my surgeon yet...and I won't meet her until October so I guess I'll see.

I mostly just tak with office staff and they haven't said anything so I don't know if the surgeon. I've already done the endoscopy, EKG, lab work and swallow study...so I'm thinking everything is ok....but I'm still nervous that it will effect wether or not I get approved.

I've also read my benefits book from my insurance and it doesn't say anything regarding that but I also don't want to be denied from surgery because it was in like fine print or something.

My surgeon had a requirement that patients lose weight before she would agree to the surgery. She wanted me to lose 25 to 30 lbs based on my 377 starting weight. I was 326 when I weighed in the morning of surgery. She was very pleased.

My insurance required 6 months of supervised weigh ins. The way the nurses explained it the bmi still had to meet the criteria but the insurance otherwise didn't focus on gains or losses.

Over the 6 months of weigh ins my numbers mostly went down but I did have a small gain one month. But overall, I lost 51 lbs from November 2016 to May 2017 doing Protein focus program aiming for 120g a day and built up to 3 workouts with a trainer and 2 extra days of cardio.

I'm about 14 weeks post op and doing 80g protein, 2 to 3 days/week at gym and I'm down another 37 lbs for 88 lbs total.

I was told at my 2nd office visit that I needed to show weight loss or my insurance company could deny the surgery. I lost 5 lbs my 3rd and final visit before submission to the insurance company and I was approved. You already have your approval so I don't see you having an issue. Just turn that + to a - and you should be good.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
