Hi Everyone,

I have been reading these posts for a few weeks and I am still at the undecided stage of whether I want the lapband or not. I have been to the seminar given by the doctor who does the surgery and he said that you must eliminate coffee entirely from your life. I haven't seen anyone talking about coffee so I thought I would ask if anyone else was told this or if anyone still drinks coffee after banding. I would really miss my morning coffee (I drink it black). I have found out my insurance company does cover the surgery and am leaning towards it but I am still a bit reluctant. Thanks for your input in advance.

I have not heard about giving up caffeine, CARBONATION YES . I drink ice tea and If you like the 'taste" of coffee or cappuccinos type drinks , I found these protien shakes a few weeks ago , they have 20 g of protien in each 16 oz bottle ( each bottle is 2 servings) , they do have caffeine in them as well.

But they are from Bolthouse farms and they are all natrual , a little high in sugar , they have a hazel nut flavor, chocholate mocha and a vanilla chi .

They are AWSESOME and do not taste like protien shakes at all . they are in the produce section of my grocery store.

Here are the arguments against coffee:

1. Coffee is a known gastric irritant. Anything that is a gastric irritant could *possibly* contribute to erosion of the Lap-Band into the stomach wall. (This is also why Band patients are told to avoid NSAIDS)

2. Coffee is a diuretic, and most Lap-Band patients have difficulty in getting in enough fluids. If a person is drinking *any* beverage containing caffeine, the diuretic effect of that beverage must be compensated for by additional Fluid intake. (This is one reason why people are told to avoid caffeinated soft-drinks)

3. Coffee is a stimulant due to the caffeine content. Some doctors believe that *any* stimulant will *also* stimulate hunger.

If there are any other arguments against drinking coffee, I am unaware of them.

Doctors have very different opinions on the consumption of different foods after Lap-Band. Your doctor may not agree with one or any of the above reasons, which is why it is always best to ask your doctor.

Wow great info Wendell , I totally see the logic in some of the above info .

Although i was not told to avoid it ( I was told to avoid NSAIDS) I may start to watch my intake a bit, I dont drink many caffienate drinks anymore.

But my new protien shakes I found do have caffiene in them . So thank you for that info , its helpful

this is what i told my brother in law when he was thinking about surgey.

He was focusing on what he was not going to be able to eat anymore, mainly drink soda's and a few other things he liked. I told him " what do you prefer, to live or to continue to shorten your life and drink and eat crap for the rest of your life by being obese ! " Is is REALLY worth not having surgery because you would not be able to eat or drink ONE thing ? to me that seems silly .

I gave up smoking and sodas, 2 of the most difficult things I have ever quit in my life. BUT I did it a yr before i had surgery . And it was the best thing I ever did besides surgery . I gave up those 2 things and had a surgery that will make me healthy and prolong my life.

Just my input

Thanks Mindy, you are absolutely right. It seems silly to be like that over one thing like that. It's a small sacrifice to pay for being healthy and living longer and having a quality of life I have dreamed of. Thanks for setting me straight.

Please dont think i do not understand. I totally do .. I did NOT want to quit smoking when I did. I enjoyed smoking . My doc told me though that he would not do surgery on me if i smoked. I also drank about a 6 pack of coke a day .

this is sort of how I looked at it . why have surgery to get healthy if i was going to keep doing something that was unhealthy . Which included eating things that are un healthy for me

I still think about that if i feel like eating something I shouldnt .

I drink like 1-1/12 big cups almost everyday. Thats what gets me going, but maybe I need to get going on a Protein Shake instead...lol. I am lacking on that.

I just read up on what my doctor says about drinks containing caffeine... coffee, tea, sodas etc. Apparently they stimulate the appetite and inhibits the absorption of Iron. Also can cause dehydration and kidney stones. I had the same question the other day... cause I love my coffee.

I was kind of curious about this as well. I don't drink coffee very often maybe like 1x every other month. I wonder if I would have to give up my Starbucks. I am going to ask my surgeon. They did tell me that some caffine was ok.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
