When is your 1st fill?

Recommended Posts

Woohoo my first follow up appointment with my Doctor is tomorrow and I am hoping that he will give me a fill. I have already lost quite a lot of weight (much more than I had expected) but it is because I am making sure that I make healthy food choices and really limit the amounts I eat....I can actually go shopping now and walk straight past the lolly and potato chips aisles!!!!! :)

I am going to see about a fill a week from tomorrow. I am not sure I need one because I am not really hungry- and it is easily satisfied, but I can eat more then I should. I am still losing wt but more slowly then before (only .8 lbs last week). I am so worried about being overfilled. I think if they do it I will ask for a very conservative fill. I was so tight just after surgery, I'm a bit gun shy. -

I have just returned home after my first fill. The doc told me that all bands are "primed" with 3-4 cc of saline during surgery, and I checked Allergan's instruction manual (for surgeons, available online) and indeed these are the instructions that Allergan gives. Priming the tubing replaces all the "dead space" with Fluid. That amount shouldn't provide restriction.

So today he put 1 cc in my band, no flouro - 1 poke but with a little searching. I don't notice any restriction. He said to call next week and we'll schedule another fill if I don't notice restriction. He doesn't wait a month between fills (he said "that just wastes time.") I'm all for that.

I notice lots of people say they got 4cc or 3 cc or whatever, on the first fill. It makes you wonder - since bands are filled during surgery with 3 cc, if those docs are doing fills by adding an additional 4 cc,s or they add 1 cc to make a total of 4 cc.

I had 4.2cc in my band during surgery but it was all removed 1 week later. They said they always prime it, but I guess it depends on the band you get.

Hi Holly,

I had my first fill today and got 1cc too. I don't feel any different. I will schedule a fill for 2 weeks from now. I'd like to feel some kind of restriction. I didn't even have any after surgery. I was just in so much pain that I ate less. Didn't lose anything. I hope I can lose some weight cuz people are looking at me and think'n: "She's still as fat as ever".

My 1st fill is Nov 28. I can't wait. I know they say don't expect much the 1st fill but if I didn't see the scars I'd swear I didn't have the surgery. I have no restriction now, it's less and less each week. I usually have some when I wake up but not even that now.

I had my first fill yesterday - my surgeon was pleased with my weight loss so far. He told me that he prefers to go very slowly with the fills so I am preparing myself to maybe not notice too much difference for a while yet. My next fill will be in Jan 08 as I am going to be away next month and he doesn't want to rush things. I didn't feel any pain, just a little discomfort at the time. I was on clear fluids for 24 hours and have just had a couple of spoons of mashed potato as my first meal.

I was nervous and anxious for my first fill. I went today and he put 2cc. I am happy to say it went without a problem and no pain what so ever. I hope my post calms anyone else about to go in for a fill because it really was so simple and took less than a minute. I met with a nutritionist also. I am back on Clear Liquids today, mushies tomorrow and easy solids three days out. He said not to judge anything until the two week mark because you really cannot tell until then if you need more or less. I am understanding this all so much better and feel much more relaxed. Good luck to all heading for your first fill. I hope you have as great an experience as I did. :D

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
