When to Start Resistance Training?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on Aug. 2. Was able to move fluids up to 1.5 oz/15 min with additional Water, but my brain still feels pretty foggy. Not sure what is causing that, I'm sleeping a ton. I've been walking daily, up to 5k steps, and planning on getting to 7500 today. I know that resistance training with a band is a good way to help keep skin toned so I was wondering how soon post op folks started doing that? Any resources would also be appreciated.

Most bariatric surgeons in the U.S. have a 6-week restriction on resistance training. In other words, resistance exercises are not advised for the first 6 weeks post-op.

I didn't resume resistance training or cardio exercise until 3 months post-op.

For me it was 3 weeks. Wounds should look good, no pain, and not overdoing it.

Suggestions vary. I wouldn't do any resistance training until the pain is really gone and I'd stop at the moment the abdominal wall feels weird in any kind of way. Better safe than sorry. No one needs a hernia.

Congratulations on your surgery!
I'm 3 weeks out.
My surgeon released/ removed restrictions from week 2.

How about just asking your surgeon when to start. At the end of the day we are not your surgeon and we all respond to things differently. Better to be safe than sorry. Your surgeon will be happy to fear that you are ready to move forward. Just ask

All the best on your journey!

My surgeon cleared me at 2 weeks. She said if anything hurt to stop that activity.
I didn't return to gym and trainer until week 7. I didn't feel ready.
I did walking and some aerobic dvds until then. I did try some bands around 4 weeks and felt fine but I didn't push myself hard like I do at the gym. Now having been at gym for a few weeks I'm still not at the full hour of a workout. We do 40 minutes plus 20 minutes of stretching, foam rolling etc...

I think it took me 3-4 months before I was up for resistance training.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
