Popcorn.. when did you start eating it

You are 12 weeks. Almost nothing is a slider at 12 weeks. popcorn is definitely a slider.

Introducing it when it isn't a slider is just going to make it easier to over eat when it is a slider.

Protein Bars used to have me stuff at 3 to 6 months. Now I can eat like 3 back to back if I want. They offer no restriction. Luckily I know they aren't good for you so I eat them rarely.

If your speaking to me, I am not 12 weeks, I am 18 almost 19 weeks post-op and there are items already that I have noticed slide for me and popcorn is not one of them. I was just offering the OP my personal experience on this journey and at this point in time popcorn does not slide for me like some things do but like I said everyone is different and everyone has different trigger foods. Popcorn is not a trigger for me, I barely ate it pre-surgery as I had braces growing up and it was not an allowed food so I just never got into it. But for the OP it sounds like it would be a trigger for her.

I'm six weeks and have had some. I went to the movies and got a kids pack portion and threw out the leftovers. I was able to eat it just fine, and I made the conscious choice to include it in moderation into my diet (I go to the movies less than once a month, and that's the only time I eat popcorn.)

HOWEVER, there are foods I can physically tolerate post op that I WON'T eat "in moderation" because I can't trust myself with them. Oreos and other bagged Cookies never come into my house. Never ever. Because I know if I buy them saying to myself "I'll just eat a single portion once in a blue moon" I'd be goddamn lying to myself. I would eat a whole bag in one go and I know it. I love Oreos SO MUCH, but there's no avoiding the reality that they are a binge eating trigger food. I've had to say goodbye to them.

Some people take a hard line toward their diet post surgery whereas others are more permissive. That's an individual choice to make, and you have to take the pros and cons into account, preferably with the guidance of your registered dietician or other health professional.

You know yourself. Are you opening a door to binge eating? Are you lying to yourself when you say you're going to eat this item in moderation and only on occasion? By eating this food, are you going to be foregoing a healthier choice to the point where you are not meeting your nutrition goals for the day? Have you planned for and measured your portion and limited your access/exposure to this food? Will this food be a gateway (ie. "well I can't very well have movie theatre popcorn and not get a large coke and a box of chocolate candies to go with it!") to more non-nutritious choices?

I also do this knowing I may have to re-evaluate down the line. Right now my priority is to let myself eat certain "no-no" foods in moderation, but with the understanding that if that derails my progress toward health, I may have to add more restrictions to myself. And ultimately, I may not lose as much weight as I would if I'd resolved to have a stricter diet right from the beginning.

You may think "well that's hardly worth the risk!", in which case you have your answer: bring a better for you snack and a bottle of Water to the movies instead.

There are hardly any foods, Condiments, or beverages one can buy in a store that meet your criteria of "real food".

Most stuff in a store is real food. The whole meat and produce department is filled with real food. Avoiding processed food is pretty easy, humans lived for thousands of years without it.

I'm one person and I spend less than $50 a week on groceries and most of that is spent on Protein and I don't even go out of my way to bargain shop because I am lazy. I shop at the "most expensive" grocery store chain in my area, because they the best quality meat. I could save more by buying in bulk but I hate frozen meat so I spend more because I buy everything fresh. I eat at least a pound of meat a day and it costs me $5 a day or less.

Eating healthy isn't expensive. I can catch pork chops on sale for $1.69 a pound when the average Protein Bar is over $2 for just One Bar.

Pretending that eating healthy is expensive is a cop out.

Eating natural real foods is cheap. It just isn't convenient, but the cost of convenience comes in other ways.

I don't care that you like Protein Bars, Hell I like protein bars, but I am going to have to quit them because my favorite one has been lying about the content. :57_cry:

They are fake and made in a factory. They have a long just of ingredients that 95% of people can't even pronounce. Acting like they are real food when they are manufactured is disingenuous.

So killjoys it is. I have seen others say it is a trigger food, and then others saying it is fine for them. I think you will have to see for yourself.
Nutritional content 3 cups
93 cal, 15gr net carbs (18gr - 3gr fiber) and 3gr protein
So it's not exactly a killer, and neither is the butter. I have seen most successful people on here consume fat without guilt once they get farther along in there weight loss.

Thank you. I was 330 and went to 240 on my own before considering surgery I kept a strong workout routine and eat food in moderation, however I do like popcorn and it was my snack choice I didn't do sweets Cookies cake pop and I didn't even eat meat so I just wanted to know if it's been ok for people

Thank you for this response it was very helpful. I lead a very active lifestyle prior to surgery and will continue my lifestyle. I was in debate about the surgery because I was successful on my own with just working out and eating correctly but I was still at a high bmi so I moved forward with the surgery. I have excellent control but was worried if the popcorn had bad effects on the sleeve

I've had a few bites of popcorn since my surgery and it was fine, because popcorn isn't a *thing* for me. I can take it or leave it. Nutrition-wise, it's not worth the space and otherwise not worth the time it takes me to floss my teeth, so it's probably a 'safe' thing for me to have around.

Popcorn sounds like it might be a *thing* for you, so I'd caution you to avoid it or be veryveryvery careful when eating it or spending time around it. My *thing* is sweet baked goods. I'd cut one of my kids for a blueberry scone or a slice of red velvet cake. So they aren't a part of my life...I can't be trusted alone with them, and they aren't nutritionally worth the space in my stomach.

You truly have to make your decisions about food very carefully and very thoughtfully. I crashed and burned at about 5 months on a cookie binge...took me 2 weeks to stop wanting to buy cookies/bake cookies/order Cookies at restaurants/steal cookies from Girl Scouts. YMMV, but it seems to be a common point among us all, having a *thing* that might be a good idea to avoid.

@ShelterDog64

If you can control yourself with ice cream. Halo Top has a Red Velvet flavor. Luckily they seem to have a quality control issue. Sometimes it is amazingly delicious like a Southern Grandma made it, and other times it is just okay. Which prevents me from getting it all the time, Even if you can't control yourself and eat the whole pint, a pint of Halo top is minimal calories.

I seriously need to give this stuff a try. I don't normally have ice cream in our house because my husband will eat an entire 2L container in one sitting if it's there, and not only does that cost way too much, but it also puts him in a terrible guilty mood for days... but now that summer is coming up it might be nice to have a pint around just for me. just have to buy a flavour he won't eat lol. do they do Peanut Butter?

You could also take a scoop of Peanut Butter, mix with however much Fage plain yougurt and then get it close to freezing. I use whey Protein Powder and Fage. One scoop and about 5 oz yogurt will give you 30-35 grams Protein. Thats more than an entire pint of Halo.

Sometimes I wish I liked yogurt but I would starve to death on Water before I eat it. I wasn't super crazy about it after surgery, but post-op it is nastiest thing on earth.

The Peanut Butter Quest powder is really good. You can make awesome Cookies with it.

You can also make your own ice cream. I did, when I was less lazy and halo top was harder to find.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
