How soon is too soon for a road trip?

Recommended Posts

3 days after surgery my husband & I need to take the kids to their week long summer camp. My husband can do the trip on his own but things run smoother when moms around. Is a 6 hr. round road trip too much just 3 days out?IMG_0076.JPG

I would say talk to your Dr. I would think that as long as you're not the one driving and frequent stops are invoked, then it shouldn't be too big of a problem. But@snapy17 is right, it probably won't be a fun trip. Talk to your Dr though and get his/ her opinion.

My surgeon told me no and I was a month out.

I think all surgeons are different. One may say no, another might say yes, and another might say listen to your own body and takes your queues from it. I'm allowed to travel after my surgery for as long as I can tolerate. I'm just not allowed to drive myself until I'm totally off the pain meds that are prescribed afterwards. That's why I made the suggestion to talk to her Dr. All Doctors are different.

I took just a 3 hour trip 2 weeks out, and I was not happy. I managed, but it wasn't fun. I'd leave this one to your husband if possible.

My family went on spring break 3 days after my surgery. My husband drove and I sat shotgun with my pain meds on board and watched netflicks. Once we got to Florida, I sat and enjoyed the view for a week. It was a good chance for me to get my head in the right place and enjoy my family. I did talk with my surgeon about it in advance and he was fine with me being in the car. He did send me home with Lovenox knowing that was my plan.

My surgeon requires us to be no farther than 1 hour away for the first 7 days in case there are any complications I also don't think I would have been very comfortable in the car for much longer than my ride home. I swear I felt every bump, dip, pothole in the road. It's hard letting go of mommy responsibilities. I felt very disconnected from my kids/family my first week home, but I"m grateful that my hubs had the reins so I could rest and be comfortable.

My doctor told me that I could go on a six hour road trip after two weeks, and even then I will need to get out of the car about every two hours and walk around rest area for at least five minutes. But not before two weeks because of blood clotting.

I traveled 6 days post-op. It was a total 12 hour drive. It took us 2 days. I was very unhappy. The drain was annoying. It's a good thing I had a beautiful beach view from the hotel. I just lay there looking at the the Water. I came out once or twice. It also took us 2 days to get home. I asked my hubby to drop me off at the ER when we got back to town. Ended up staying 2 days.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
