How did you handle changing clothing size ?

Recommended Posts

I may have already commented but 70+lbs down and im still wearing the same leggings i was wearing near my highest weight. Im just noticing how big they are getting and now im debating my wardrobe for the summer and honestly it's giving me anxiety. I plan on losing more weight so i don't want to buy a bunch of new stuff but at the same time the only summer clothes i have are from when i was almost 100lbs heavier. It's going to be an interesting summer indeed.

Go to Walmart!! Their leggings are like 4$ and also spoil yourself a little! you worked so hard for this, why not go out and get 3-4 nice tunic shirts and some leggings so your comfortable all summer while you continue to work hard towards your goal!

You sound like my sister lol. She's always trying to get me to dress up or put more effort into my look. I don't have a look lol. Im a work in progress and somehow they don't get that I'm not hugely into make up and clothes just yet. Im still trying to wrap my mind around losing this much weight and the fact that i don't look the same. Maybe Im subconsciously trying to look slightly homely to deflect attention from away myself? Either way i totally forgot about Walmart. Gonna have to hit them up. Thanks girl!

I haven't had surgery yet, but will next month. Lately my pants of choice have been leggings. I know some say they aren't pants... but I love them and since this brand fits from 10/12 up to a 22/24, I'll be able to wear them to goal. As far as tops, I'll probably by several tank tops and wear one of my covers over it.

Other than that, I know my local bariatric support group does monthly clothes swaps. Check with your surgeons office and see if they know of any.

I love the plus size viv collection of leggings on Amazon. They're also size 12 to 24! They will carry me through the next few months!

Yes they will! I love them too! Affordable and good quality and comparable to other pricier brands!

I am a bit confused. I went on that site and saw that for that $100 a month you can get three things. You pay $100.00 each month and don't even get to keep the items you selected. At $100.00 a month that seems pricey to me or am I not understanding how this works.
I have been afraid to buy anything as I hate shopping and I haven't any idea what size I would be. At my heaviest I was buying 2 of the same 5X blouses taking 10 inches out of the sides of one of them and adding it to the other blouse. I did buy a Walmart 3x in December as I needed to make it into a ugly shirt for a Christmas party. However since then I haven't bought anything. I have just been sewing in all my clothing. But I am tired of that as I have done it three times. Do any of the stores help you to determine your size and what looks good on you? I have not been in a true clothing store since I was in my 20's that is over 40 years ago. Everything in the last 40 year I have only bought out of a super sized catalog. Has anyone else who weighed as much as I did and lost as much as I have had these feelings and what did you do to get over them? I know I would look and feel better if I got better fitting clothing but I have no idea where to start. I have a huge amount of excess skin and am hiding in my 4 to 5 X tops and pants. I almost feel like I need my own Stacy and Clinton to tell me what to wear.

I am also a member of GB! Think of it like Netflix for clothes. For the $100 a month, you get three things at one time. So they send you a box with three things, you can wear those three things as often as you want and for as long as you want. If you only like two of them, you return the third and they send you out a different item to replace that one. If you decide you really love any or all of them, and don't want to return them, you can purchase them, often for a really good price. But why would you want to do that when your size is changing so often? Wear them until they're too big, and then return them. Then they will send you three more things that you can wear as much as you want and return again. For me it has been an amazingly perfect solution for my changing size. The only thing I'm running into now is that a lot of their options are bordering on too big for me, even in the smallest sizes! I will be really sad to see my subscription no longer worth the price, but I will be really blessed to know that I am no longer in those sizes!

I did not know about the company during weight loss and saw every sie from 18 to 0. I am not a shopper so hated it - though it is easier when you fit into - anything. Work saw less variation for a year.

I'm glad I work in the OR. I have to wear these ugly teal colored scrubs they provide to us. I'll most likely wear leggings to school/leisure and buy an outfit for special occasions. Then when I get to my goal weight, ball outta control [emoji23][emoji23]

Because of how rapid my weight gain was, I was in the fortunate (if one can call it that) position of having a lot of new clothes (in one US visit went on a small spree of like $3,000) that suddenly were too small for me. Instead of throwing them out or donating them I kept them stored away until I lost weight again (whenever that would be). I remember even 50x32's were way too tight on me only a couple months ago, now I fit in 40x32 and 42x32 pants with some extra room to spare (a couple need belts). Added like 15-20 (all hardly worn) pairs of shorts back to my dresser, 15 pairs of pants, 30 pairs of boxers, and 20 t-shirts.. so f**king stoked.

Community wide garage sales, look in the newspaper or small town flyers, they happen here all summer, even in the gated community it is open to the public starting day 2. Church thrift sales, again call around a little or check bulletin boards. Local craigslist. Marshall's or TJMaxx, Cato.

I only had pre op clothes even after post op, but the pants were falling off of me and it was pretty ridiculous. Well I bought a few things and in the next couple of weeks those things didn't fit me then I was searching for more clothes and this has been an expensive journey so far.
So instead I'm going down a whole size and wearing those for now but meanwhile selling some stuff online to use towards other clothes.

I'm only 3 months Post op too and have lost almost 40lbs and 2 pants sizes and 2 tops sizes. I can't imagine my goal weight and how much longer I will continue to lose.

I'm a t shirt and jeans sorta girl, so my closet is pretty basic. I buy a few pair of jeans in each size as i have gone down, from Walmart, and then i buy the $5 v-neck t-shirts, long or short sleeved depending on the weather, and just wash and rotate. Thrift shops are cheaper of course, but I have always had a hard time finding plus sizes at those places.

I'm pre-op, but I never spend too much on my clothing now. I love American Eagle and Aerie online (and when you shop their sales and use a coupon you can get leggings and shirts for $10 or less sometimes!!). I also love Ross and tjmaxx, and you can even find cute and cheap things on Groupon sometimes! Just be sure the item says "free returns" or else you'll be stuck with it even if it doesn't fit. I buy my pants from Walmart (really cute and comfy jeggings for only $14). They're nice enough for me to wear to work.

I don't want to run out and spend a lot on clothing until I reach goal weight. The goodwill and thrift stores in my area are lackluster . Since am a stay at home mom I don't need anything dressy except for church . Any ideas?

I was think about maybe Sams club? I have a Target near by but the plus size section is nonexistent .

What did you do ?

I love thread up!! I am down 100 pounds since rny 10/24. Went from a 22 to an 8. I didn't buy much at first but they have nice things for nicer prices. You get 40% off your first purchase and you can sell it back once you size down :) good luck. Referral link below :)

Check out thredUP, the web’s largest selection of like-new designer looks at up to 90% off retail. It’s also the easiest way to clean out your closet by ordering a Clean Out Kit. Use my link for $10 off!

How often did you lose a size in the beginning? Like a size a month? I can't wait. I was just sleeved on 3/28 :)

I was sleeved on 4/17, I loss weight before my surgery so I had already thrown out clothes. I have a few drawers of clothes I hadn't worn for YEARS, guess what, today I am throwing all those clothes. I have lost so many inches around my waist and legs everything drops off me. I have a ton of shirts I have purchased over the years that NEVER fit and those are fitting now.

I'm going to buy one or two pants at a time to get me through and not look like clown.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
