Newbie from Georgia

Hi everyone! My name is Pamela and I am 27 years old. Oddly enough, I was very thin through most of my teenage years, and very athletic. I played a lot of sports in high school. As I got closer to my senior year, I noticed that I was putting on a little weight. I didn't think much about it at the time.

About a year after I graduated, I got married to my high school sweetheart. By that time I had gained over 50 lbs and was at about 200 lbs. I was very concerned about how fast the weight came on. I was also having some female problems too. I went to my doctor and he did several test on me to find out if anything was wrong and the results shocked me! He diagnosed me with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). I had never heard of this before. He told me it was a hormonal disorder and one of the side effects was weight gain. He also told me that I would probably have trouble getting pregnant. My heart dropped when i heard this. I always thought when i was ready i would just be able to have a baby. It took 6 years before we were able to get pregnant and by the grace of God we now have a beautiful, healthy boy.

I've tried every diet there is, I think, and nothing ever worked for me. I was 330lbs at my heaviest. I have been blessed with the opportunity to get the band. I've been banded for about 10 days and i am doing great. I am sooo excited about the journey ahead. I lost 13 lbs on the pre-op diet and have lost 16 lbs since my surgery. I know i rambled but i just wanted to introduce myself and see if anyone else has PCOS that has been banded and can tell me about your experience. Thanks for listening!

Did anyone get a sleep study done before surgery? If so who did you use and how much should I expect to pay?

I had one done to prove a comorbidity for my surgery I used the hospital here in Albany and hey billed my insurance about $2800. Hope that helps.

how's everyone doing?

BC/BS of GA is going to drive me insane!!!!

this waiting game is ridiculous.

That's great to hear! Sounds like you'll be banded before you know it, hope everything goes well. Keep us updated on your progress!

where are u having your procedure done?

Hi everyone! I hope you don't mind me jumping in. I'm also from Georgia, SW GA to be exact. I am going for my seminar tomorrow night and hope the ball moves pretty quickly from there. I have UHC and I was relieved to hear on these boards that they tend to approve pretty quick. I'm planning on using Dr. Crooms in Tallahassee.

I'm doing great, 4jin! I was hoping you would have heard something by now, hang in there and hopefully you will know something soon. Have you tried calling them to speed up the process a little? I don't know if it would help but it might be worth a try. I've got my fingers crossed that hear soon!

Hey allykat, we certainly don't mind you joining in. It's nice to meet you. I was fortunate in that I didn't have to wait long at all. Good luck at the seminar and I hope things move quickly for you. Have you met with the doctor yet?

Welcome kudo! I had my surgery in Albany, Ga by Dr. Bagnato 9-20-07.

You lost 50 lbs already. I only lost 24 lbs I was kind of bad in December. What is your secret?

I lost a lot of weight really fast to begin with. I probably lost over 20 lbs the first two weeks, but believe me, it has really slowed down. I've actually hit a plateau and haven't lost hardly anything in a month. It's so depressing, but hopefully it will pass soon.

Hey Georgia Girl,

I have not yet met with the surgeon, other than meeting him in a room with about 20 other people tonight at the seminar! He seemed really nice. I like that with him, everything is really included for the first year - all office visits and all fills. After that, he only charges like $25-50 for fills. I was worried about that after reading how expensive they could be!

Allykat

Wow, that does seem like a good price on the fills. I've heard many people say their docs charge around $200. I'm glad your seminar went well. Did you get all your questions answers and are you ready to begin this process?

I had no questions other than the price of fills...lol. I knew some charged around $200, and he may do that for people who are not his original patients. I have researched this for a year, so I could have probably given the seminar! LOL! This site, especially, has been helpful.

So now I am patiently waiting for 9 am when his office is open so that I can make my appointment. I did find out out that I can use someone of my choosing for the psych eval and nutritionist consult, so that helps. I really don't want to drive to Tallahassee for those. I work with a psychologist, so I plan to talk to her. I really didn't want to tell anyone about this, but I think I can trust her!

Waaaa! I just called for my appt. and it isn't until 2/14! Don't they know I wanted this yesterday? I wonder if I can get the psych eval and nutritionist visit over with while I wait?
