Hi, I just found this thread.....I'm PCOS positive....LOL

After several years of electrolysis, the best thing that ever happened for me was laser hair removal....then whoops - I fell in love with Mr. Right and decided i wanted children after we were married and was told by my OB/GYN it was going to be difficult. I went on a low carb diet before my wedding to lose some weight and lo and behold I found out I was prego 3 weeks before my wedding (I had no idea as I hadn't had a period in months-maybe even years - I couldn't remember) and now have a beautiful 3 year old daughter) so PCOS has made me fat, given me excess hair, but I seem to have managed to accomplish quite a bit in spite of it.

I am noticing that my weight loss is way slower than most on this site, but it was next to impossible before the band. I would spend months at the gym and dieting to only MAINTAIN - now with the band I have lost 30 lbs in 7 months! This is the best thing I have done for myself (and family) and i'm so happy to be here....I look forward to reading more about those of you in similar situations and your struggles with this condition.

Renee

Hi Renee! It's nice to meet you. I had a hard time getting prego, but now I have a son that is 22 months old. I also did a low carb diet and lost about 50lbs, I think that really helped me . I hope the side effects of PCOS get better for all of us as we lose weight. You're doing great, thanks for sharing your story.

I think that we spoke briefly on a thread in the recent past. Quickly, I have "officially" had pcos for 12 years. Figured it out the year we got married. We went through 6 years of infertility injections and nothing.....two years passed-threw myself into my business-and there is the first one....22 months later....the second one. The big thing I learned from that....God makes babies, not doctors or science or drugs. Anyway....I, too, was an athlete all throughout HS and college. I had a freak accident on our honeymoon which landed me with two fused vertebra. So, I wasn't as active as I had been. Unfortunately, with the insulin resistance that pcos brings, I have gained just over 100 lbs since 94. I was just put on my doc's schedule today for the 22nd of Jan. I am beyond thrilled. I have been told that my insulin should normalize, the hair should subside, my periods will normalize and not be so painful, my sleep apnea will go away, and I will burn fat like every other human on the planet! Yea! So, so, so excited. I'm grateful for this site.

Hey Amy!

It's nice to meet you. Congratulations on your surgery date! I can tell you things will get better. I'm already having regular periods and I'm not wearing my C-pap mask anymore. I'm not snoring anymore and I sleep a lot better. I think my mood swings are even a little bit better. It's amazing what a little weight loss can do for us. Good luck to you and let me know if I can help you in anyway. I'm still sort of new but I will answer any questions I can.

I am amazed how much info is shared over this bd.

Somone will to say who or where they got banded and where they get their fills. How long have you been banded and does anyone want to eat -try to eat with family --take two bites and realize I won't be eating this meal....only 45 min later hungry??? How can I get more quick Protein in me?

Joyful

I was banded by Dr Bagnatto in Albany on 11/16/07. IT HAS BEEN GREAT !! I eat with my family for the most part you have to use your own judgement . After the post op diet when you are given more of a range of foods you will have to figure out which ones you need to avoid pretty much everyone I have talked to has been different. I have not been really hungry since surgery but everyone is different so it may take a couple of fills for you to reach a comfortable level. And the quickest way to get Protein is with a Protein Shake but watch for low sugar and calories or youwill sabbotage your weight loss. Dr. B recommends 60 grams of protein a day and gives you a list of foods that are good choices, if you need it I can copy it and send it to you, but it is really just common foods like turkey, chicken, tuna, eggs, cheese. Just be sure to put the protein in first then some veggies if you have room tha tkeeps the hunger away longer. Take care and nice to meet you.

Hey Joyful and Mia!

Joyful, there is a lot of information shared on this board. It's great to hear everyone's stories and share experiences.

Mia, I'm just amazed at what a little weight loss can do. Your date is coming up soon. How's the pre-op diet going?

So far so good, Did you eat baked sweet potatos on the pre-op? I saw on a sight that they are okay foods on sugar busters but it doesnt say that I can have them on my sheet from dr b's office. So far I'm doing good, the biggest challenge is not eating with the tv on. I can't believe at how addicted to watching tv while eating I am. I have lost about 5 lbs so far and Im only on day 4 of the diet! I know its just Water but hey, every little pound counts!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
