Advice on getting in the protein

Recommended Posts

Hi family. I was just sleeved on the 15th of Feb and I'm concerned about getting in my 60 grams of Protein. I can't seem to make myself drink it all. Yesterday was my first day out of the hospital, and now that I'm home, all I wasn't too do is sleep. When I try to stink my Protein Shake, it seems like I can feel it going into my stomach and I just can't drink another drop after that. Please give me some advise on what to do to get in my required daily grams. Thank you [emoji173]

I was advised that the most important thing is Water this close out. Protein will happen in time but you CANNOT become dehydrated.
What i did was make up 4oz of Protein Shake and take a small sip every 5 to 10 minutes. Depending on thickness. But i didn't REALLY get into shakes until almost my second week or third week. I had to prioritize. I couldn't focus on protein AND liquid so i made liquids my priority and slowly started adding in more Protein Shakes. But i didn't and still don't have unflavored Protein Powder. That would have helped if i could have had it with my broths.

My doc's office sells products from Health Wise. They had a Protein mix for drinks so it was thinner than a shake and were fruit flavors. While I didn't thoroughly enjoy them they were easier to get down some times and they had 15g of Protein per 8 oz of Water. Stuff ain't cheap, but it helped me get through the early stages.

Are you mixing your shakes with milk? I know Water isn't all that appealing to some people, but mixing it that way might make it go down a bit easier. I had to sacrifice protein for water intake the first few days until it got easier to drink my shakes.

Walking always seemed to help me. Even if I just stood up for a bit and paced around the room it seemed to help. I've noticed that if I'm sitting on the chair/couch and sit too long after having a shake it doesn't sit well. I'm really trying to get into the habit of getting up immediately for a few minutes after a "meal".

Soon after surgery I used to mix my Protein powder with 10 oz Water and continually sip it. That way i got the fluids and Protein in. If i have a shake now I just mix it with 4oz of Water.

Congratulations !

Hi. I had surgery on 2/6. I still have trouble getting in all my Protein. Your tummy is very swollen right now so there isn't much room. I really did just sip Water and take my chewable vitamins that first week and was able to get half a Premier Protein shake in most days. By the end of the first week I started feeling more normal. Now I am 11 days out and able to get 45-50g of protein. Almost there:-). It takes time for your new little tummy to heal. I am learning my new hungry and full cues right now. Hunger for me is non-existent.

Congrats on your surgery. I think it gets better with time.

GENEPRO is a tasteless Protein powder that mixes into anything for 30 grams of protein in one tablespoon full. Add the powder into a small beverage twice a day and you will hit the protein mark. For hot liquids, dissolve and mix it in cold before heating or its clumpy.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
