Was actually scheduled in to go and see Dr Chris DB - on 3rd Sept!!- but fab sis has offered me £ to stay in UK so helps with child cover... what is average loss you've witnessed once banded?

Any tips? I read I should take short sleeved pjs with me? I've already multi-vits stocked up and couple cans of Slim Fast? Anything else I should so/ be aware of? And do you know when roughly at what mm peeps tend to feel 'it'? Sorry got so many questions but just so keen to know more! x

Just what I was going to ask, what surgeon and what hospital are you going to Fizz?

I only took Neurofen melts and I didnt even need those as they gave me some adult Calpol in the Spire ( Bupa).

Also didnt need pjs either as they gave me a gorgeous nighty lol.

I was operated on the thursday and travelled home by car on the friday afternoon.

All surgeons have different rules.

Hi Troops

MMM/Freckles thanks for your wise words - I know I am being very impatient but still learning what is right and wrong with this band.

My daughter got the measuring tape out today and I have lost 7 inches from waist, 6.5 inches from Boobs and 6 inches from hips and I have lose another 2 lbs this week so I am really pleased with it so far - I was doubting it was having any impact as although lbs were coming off I still felt the same about myself - but the tape doesnt lie - fab

Iam also feeling quite cold, not sure if this is normal but imagine it will fix itself out

Has anyone tried the bandster cook books that I have seen advertised or are they a waste of money

Kerry xx

Hi Sammy,

I have not been on for some time and thought I should really get on here for some advice. I am suffering with night time reflux, waking up coughing and choking nearly every night now, ending up on the sofa so as not to wake hubby. I guessed if I contacted Chris or Frederick for advice then they would recommend a defill and that is what I am frightened of. Is the defill a permanent thing or will you be able to get back up to where you were in time? I dont get it every night, but about 80% of the time. Can you explain more about what they advised, many thanks.

Hi there Miablue. I am so sorry I have only just read your post.

I've had 2 small defills as it is reasonably common if your band is tight. Whilst it has provided some relief I still have a night cough most nights which is really annoying. The other night I woke up with reflux coming out of my nose which was not nice!! I think I have about 7 ml in a 7-9ml band so it is pretty well topped up. However I can still eat a reasonable amount which is annoying and my weight loss has all but stopped. Each small defill has made the reflux slightly better but not got rid of it. I am considering taking a good amount out, say another 1ml and letting things settle down. Once things have settled down you can try another fill. I had lots of fills and defills during and after pregnancy and had better restriction with a smaller amount in my band but it wore off after a while. I think if I have this 1ml out now and put back in in say a month or so time my restriction will be better than it is now. I think my body gets used to it as time passes and the weight comes off. I am taking Omeprazole tablets (only available on prescription) but I can't say for sure whether or not the are helping. I forgot to take one last night and didn't wake coughing once! I've tried to keep a mental food diary and nothing really seems to trigger it but I have read certain foods make the reflux worse (citrus fruits, chocolate etc - just do a google search) so I'm trying to avoid them. I'm also not eating after 630pm and not drinking anything after 7pm which is also meant to help.

What is your restriction like? Did the reflux start soon after fill? I ask as I've had reflux a couple of times before for a week or so after a fill but never for this long!!

I will keep you posted if I get another defill as to what happens. At this rate I'll have no voice left - the night cough has left me sounding very husky!!

I hope this helps x :)

hi, I am so glad that i am back home!! had the worst time of my life. I was banded on 13th Aug, I was surprise as i did not feel much pain after the surgery, on Saturday when they took the drain it was very painful i couldn't walk at all,i had to be wheeled down to the x ray and was unable to walk due to the pain near my belly button it wasn't really my port ! I was then discharged by Dr Chris, went to the hotel by 2pm then Frederick came to see me around 7pm. from 11 pm i started vomiting but my stomach was empty it was so bad had to call a taxi and back to the hospital, i was readmitted they told me i had a bad reaction from the band. i couldn't sleep all night it was terrible i thought i was going to die. Dr Chris has already gone on holiday since Saturday but he did called to see how i was doing.

well i made it home thanks to my husband he looked after me just like i was a child.

i still have lots of pain on my port side, but i'm feeling better today.

I'm really sorry to hear about your problems. I hope ur feeling better now and started to see the effects of the band in a positive way x

hi ya Sammy

I hope I can help you - Gravitas (who I'm going through) state in 'Dietary advice after a gastric band' literature that Problem Foods are:

and I quote:

'Certain foods are not tolerated well after the operation and may need to be avoided. examples include:

*Tough red meats (ie steak and chops)

*Soft white bread

*Stringy vegetables (ie green Beans, asparagus)

*Salad

*Prawns (should be chewed VERY carefully)

*White boiled rice

*Pineapple & oranges

*Scrambled egg

Hope this helps? x

Hi Angelfizz - thanks so much. I am starting to eat a more varied diet now that my restriction isn't great including a few on your list in an attempt to fill me up! I couldn't eat them for a good while after being banded.

From my experience you aren't wasting your money. For me it was the best thing I have ever done. I've lost pretty much 6 stone (I know I can't believe it!!) over about 16 months but I've had baby in between so haven't done badly! I would like to lose at least another 2 stone but ideally another 3 and half stone. My journey has slowed down a bit because of the reflux issue but hey it's a marathon not a sprint! I'm confident I'll reach my goal and keep the weight off which I would have no way done without my band. I love it - nothing short of a miracle!!

Hello all

I haven't posted for a few days as we are away camping in Cornwall with the children. Well if you need a challenge in the first month of being banded i would suggest going camping! It's amazing just what you can't have on a restaurant menu! Did try a small part of a scone for a cream tea and ended up giving 3/4 of it to my oldest (and that was only one half of it) just couldn't manage it at all!

The best bit is that my husband still forgets that I have the band, everyone wanted a pasty and I said to him that if it's steak I will not be able to have it. So he buys 2x large & 2x small ...... Yes you guessed it steak and veg. He looked very sorry as I said I can't eat steak. Anyway, removed the pastry and binned it and the tentatively chewed like crazy through the veg. Hoping that it would go down ok. Seemed ok but then just got stuck and I had to go and get rid (TMI) just to say it wasn't pleasant. We visited the Eden project yesterday and finally I found some lovely Soup and for dinner today a lovely restaurant in St Agnes had pea and mint soup - it was delicious!

Looking forward to going home so that i can weigh and measure and see what is going on.

food has been challenging this week so relied on yoghurt, weetabix, and cracker breads and phili cheese.< /p>

Have a good week everyone and will post again when home & done weigh in on Friday.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
