If you've been off coffee so long, why would you re-addict yourself to it?

I have wanted a cup of coffee a few times since I was sleeved in Oct, but I've been on Decaf since I paid for my surgery in August. I was a big Diet Coke drinker and also consumed between 50-64oz of thick truck stop coffee before that.

After the headaches and withdrawals were gone, I vowed never again.

And every time I've planned order a coffee, I end up with tea instead. I was never a tea drinker really, but it's really grown on me (and yes, it's decaf tea whenever possible)

My Dr. And nutritionist said one cup a day as long as it doesn't bother me. I didn't give it up for my pre op diet or for post op. I stick to the one cup (literally 8 ounces) and mix it with a Protein shake. Double check with your dr, but it seems most are ok with it in moderation. Oh and I was sleeved the same day.

Ask your Dr. I had Syntrax Cappuccino until 6 weeks then I started drinking cold brew coffee.

I love coffee and I drink a lot every day.

Early on the acid in coffee is an issue so try something low acid like cold brew or french.

I was told no coffee for 3 months :(. Not even Decaf. I have the date marked on my calendar. Don't even know if I could get past the first sip right now but it still sounds appealing. NUT said it was to much acid on a healing stomach. I have my first post op appointment later this week, and I'm going to ask if decaf or green tea is ok. Herbal isn't cutting it!

I plan on allowing myself a half a cup of coffee a few days a week when I'm cleared for it. On other days I'll do tea! Either Decaf or low caffeine level.

I felt the same way as you did. I love coffee. I was sleeved on December 7. I decided to have my first cup of coffee on January 3. It was decaffeinated but it tasted horrible to me. I absolutely have no taste for coffee anymore. My doctor advised me to stay away from caffeinated beverages for three months after my surgery

Pre and post-op, I drank coffee. Every patient is different, every program is different. Thank goodness my tummy and my program welcomed it.

Yes, I agree that every program is different. It's best to check with your nutritionist.

My nutritionist said to wait 4-6 weeks until after surgery. I was such a big coffee drinker before surgery, but since post-op hadn't had any caffeine until last week when I had some coffee. It was a real treat. I love the flavor of coffee, so until my 7th week post-op, I have been drinking Decaf. I am still drinking my decaf every morning and just making the caffeinated coffee an every few days or so treat.

I believe my plan says no caffeine at all...ever, only Decaf. Which is fine by me because I went throught the withdrawls during recovery and don't want to do that again. I tried drinking some decaf coffee once but it sucked. The flavor was not like it should taste (and yes I've had decaf lots of times). I have discovered that my tastes have changed as well. So things I used to like, I dont now.

Yup. Me too.

I gave up smoking, alcohol (pretty much) to have this surgery, so you'll take my coffee from my cold, dead hands.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
