Day Two and Feeling Good -- Too Good?

Recommended Posts

My surgery was at 3 pm yesterday and I was awakened at about 4:30. I spent the night at the surgery center and husband picked me up first thing this am. My incisions aren't sore..the only pain I'm having is from gas!

I'm having no trouble with liquids, just have to remember to sip slowly or I end up with what feels like a big air bubble in my throat. I ate some Jello for Breakfast and got painful hiccups afterwards. Is that my body's cue that my new tiny tummy is FULL?

It's going to be hard to wrap my head around how very little I'll be eating now. Many people on these boards say that had no appetite, had trouble drinking Water and even the smell of food cooking made them ill. I'm not finding that at all. I'm thirsty and am sipping water constantly. My head feels hungry and my family's eggs and bacon this am looked and smelled delicious as I slurped my Jello. Is this normal? How are other Dec. 21st sleevers doing?

Not everyone has trouble with liquids immediately post-op. Those issues are usually related to swelling and people have varying amounts of swelling. You are just one of the lucky ones with minimal internal swelling, so yay for you! Your recovery should be much easier for that.

Head hunger will be STRONG immediately post-op if you aren't experiencing nausea, which, again, lucky you! It's somewhat common to hiccup as a sign of fullness. Just make sure you are weighing and measuring out ALL of your foods and liquids and ingesting them on a schedule. You can't rely on signals from your healing stomach yet.

I'm a 12/21 sleever but I'm still in the hospital. I won't go home until 12/24. I'm feeling really good but I'm also being taken care of. I have seen it smelled food since Monday night. I have done the hiccups thing a few times (ouch) I think I drank too fast. I'm thirsty but I'm sipping out of literal 1 oz plastic cups with the instructions being to take tiny sips and about 10 mins to do that. I didn't have any trouble drinking yesterday either. My ice chips went right down. Basically I'm being trained to use my sleeve as I recover. So far I'm glad I got to stay a few days and I'm happy with my decision to go for it.

Total disconnection between the head and tummy. And totally had issues with any type of liquid for 2/3 weeks. Today is my 1 month anni! I can drink normal. And I lived on yogurt for full liquids. I just took milk and watered it down and made freezy pops. Worked well with gas issues. I did the same thing with Jello.

I was sleeved 12/21 too! I go home from the hospital tomorrow. I have definitely had some hiccups, which I think was from drinking too quickly. I haven't really had an appetite for Jello or broth, but I'm getting water/crystal light in a lot easier than I thought! I think most of my pain is from gas, but I've been trying to walk as much as possible which has helped so much!

I was on 12/19 I'm trying to get my Water in and eat have not expected any hiccups but have been experiencing nausea. How long does it take for the swelling to go away? Also what does it mean when your stomach makes gurgling noises? is it hungry?

K2- don't be alarmed by the gurling noise it will setting down. Its not hunger. They took 80 percent of my stomach and it did not know what to so with itself so all things are strange down there. I did not experience nausea. I also did not have swelling just bloated because of IV Fluid.

I was sleeved on 12/19/16 and thankfully didn't have any issues except nausea a couple times. I feel like I'm starving to death. My stomach is constantly growling. I'm looking forward to oatmeal or something normal. When did everyone start using oatmeal? Second week?

@vs I just started oatmeal this week. You have to watch it with the Fiber. Also its in the head you not really starving. That part will calm down. Its a complete discount. Your stomach can only handle 3 or 4 bites of food. Your stomach is no bigger than a gulf ball.

Growling stomach has nothing to do with hunger. Most likely gas and acid. Are you on a PPI?

I wasn't allowed oatmeal at all. You should check with your nutritionist or surgeon for a list of what foods you can eat and when.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
