Recommended Posts

Thank you for the beautiful prayer. It touched my heart. My daughter is about to go and get her stent and feeding tube.

She had it done at Alabama Weight Loss in Birmingham, AL!! She was self pay. $11,900. You can look it up. My advice to people is to NEVER do Outpatient (same day) surgery with weight loss surgery. It is very risky!! We didn't know this! I wish we knew then what we know now. She hasn't used the AL doctor since we left. We have a bariatric specialist who is trying hard to get her FIXED. Thank you for your support. This is the first time I have told this story publicly, but as we sit in this hospital AGAIN and I look at my sick daughter who is fighting for her life I have to VENT!! She has 2 small children. Please pray (if you don't mind) that she heals from this horrible nightmare. I haven't even mentioned all of the stuff that we have gone thru. OH!! And did I mention the $700,000 hospital bill!

$700 000 Bill???? OMG!!!! Hearing stories like this... I'm so happy I live in Canada with Universal Health Care.

Hope she feels better soon.

I still can't believe the doctor said Not to go the hospital.

I would think all doctors would say the opposite.

He really did say that. I have a journal of everyday and everything that has happened and has been said. I also have all medical records. She had been to the ER 6 different times to 3 different hospitals. She also has Fluid on her left lung. We have talked to many bariatric docs since we have been at this major hospital and they cannot believe that he put her on Xarelto!! Most docs use Lovenox or heparin. There is no antidote for Xarelto when internal bleeding starts. It is a miracle that she is alive. Now they don't know if they can do the stent today because of her low oxygen levels. I think she has had every complication possible. The new doc has even tried to contact the AL doctor about her. He doesn't call back. Her new doc is extremely upset with him. Her new doctor is extremely caring and will eventually get her well. ????????????????????

I have talked to several attorneys and they have said unless their is a death that we have no case. I am filing a complaint with the medical board.

Still in the hospital in a lot of pain. I still believe that the weight loss surgeries are a good thing. I just want people to be aware of the terrible things that can happen. They say it is rare but we never thought it would happen to us.

Send her my love. I thank you are for sharing your daughters story. We hear so many great stories of people's journeys but there is another side. Some people are scared to open up, especially, on social media BUT I have found your story informative and it has really upset me the struggle your daughter is continuing to face. Ive been there to a degree and I'm sending all my strength to her. I hope the kids are ok to. I had little ones when I had complications so I know how Mum must be feeling.

Thank you!! I am with her at the hospital now. She was so excited about this surgery! I was excited for her because I thought the risks were so minimal She is 29 years old and was very healthy until now. She wasn't extremely overweight. She is very very sick. She has an abcess and leak. She is hooked up to so many machines. We will get through this.

I'm so very sorry this has happened. I hope her doctor loses his license and has to pay her hospital bills and then a lot more! Thank you for sharing. It's helpful to remember it's major surgery and things can go wrong (even doctor errors).

Also it's an excellent reminder that we know best when something isn't right with our own bodies and are our own best advocates. Bless you for advocating for your daughter when her doctor wouldn't! What a nightmare.

Also I would like to say to anyone who has or anyone who is about to have surgery. They tell you that left shoulder pain is GAS and it will get better in time. (This I see true) Left shoulder pain is ALSO a sign of a leak.!! It is also accompanied by a fever. This is life threatening and must be treated immediately. We have had to figure all of this out on our own. I want to help anyone that I can with this process...

How is your daughter doing? I remembered her in my prayers.

I have a camera going down on Thursday to see what the damage is after my bleed, I have also started legal action against the hospital as it was their advice on medication that caused the bleeding.

Naproxen, it caused a 2cm ulcer in the stomach and also caused issues in the duodenum. Either way the surgeon was furious i was told to use it before 6 months post op. I have been on it for years to help with the osteoarthritis in the back and spine now I can't use anything.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
